We now need to sign a big name more than ever...

I don't think we do need a 'big name' just for the sake of it. The whole reason behind going for the Kaka's and Eto'os is more driven by GC's marketing plans than anything to do with football.

We know we are not attractive yet to these marque signings, so from footballing viewpoint it makes no sense for the likes of Eto'o to even think about coming here. GC's main selling point is what he can do for a players (and in turn, ours) image. He was responsible for the global marketing of basketball's Michael Jordan and wants a footballer as the next MJ. Eto'o would have been perfect because the African market is huge and pretty much untapped. Of course a player like that would do the team no end of good also but it's really all about raising MCFC's profile worldwide. Which is why 'stratospheric' wages are not a problem, he'll pretty much pay his own wages.

From a football point of view, we do need a 20 goals a season striker and a top centre half. Not necessarily 'big names' though.

100% agree.Very well put

We need 2 central defenders a left back and two strikers. We also need to get rid of 10 players. Leaving a manageable squad of 25.

A bit to do yet before top 6 a good bet.

Couldn't disagree with you more. I want a team, a team who Wins matches, a team that plays together and a team for the future.

Big names are usually testerdays men not tomorrowa stars and the most successful sides of recent years like Barca, united, Liverpool even chelsea who were ruined by stars, have done this without signing big names. we need signings who become big names.

so let's stop trying the failed real madrid method and go for essiens, van nistelrooys and christiano ronaldo's ie when united signed him and not schevchenkos, verons and crespos.

We are also not in a desperate need for an out and put centre forward, united have lived without one since cole, arsenal since Henry and we do not have a problem with goals it is our defence and. Ability to hold it up and strength In depth we need to address.

Believe me few clubs in Europe have attacking strength we will have if we get tevez to add to roque and robinho with sweep, bojinov, petrov, Bellamy, elano etc. Orchestrated by Ireland!

I agree but, is Tevez not a big name signing? Cos it looks likwly that we're gonna get him, thats issuing a statement, isn;t it?

And terry! He may still come, hes a huge player, saying to the world that the England captain wants to play for Man City regardless of the reason, he wants to play, have some faith!

You have misunderstood my point. I know we don't need big names for the sake of it; before the interest in Eto, Terry etc I wasn't craving a marquee signing, I am not one of those people. However, I believe that now we have tried twice, and failed, it is clearly the clubs intent to bring in a big name. However, in order to not look like fools we need to get one. So I am not saying do it just for the sake of it, but the fact that we have tried twice and failed is a little embarrasing, so I now think we do need one??

I am not saying we need them for purely footballing reasons....! I am not like that. I do not crave big names just for the sake of it. I just think that it is a bit embarrasing we have tried with two big names, and failed. Because of this fact, I think we do need to sign one in oreder to save face a little.

Tevez is NOT a big name full stop......its bad enough having a manager with no name or CV The Club NEEDS a big name......Possibley Aguero or Villa....But repeat Tevez is NOT A BIG NAME......

I really dont understand the calls for us to sign another superstar. I mean I really dont. Its more likely a worry for those who have been taken in from the hype from last September. How many big names do the rags have? How many do Arsenal have? How many do Chelsea have? A big name is great for the ego but not signing one for the sake of it.

People on here are very quick to forget the players already at the club. Where exactly does this big name fit in? Midfield? No, Upfront? Maybe but at the expense of who, players that want to be here and play for the shirt? Not for me thanks, I want the players already here to get their chance. Tevez will do me just fine, a front line of Tevez, Robinho and RSC is perfect, especially when we have the likes of Petrov, SWP, Bellamy and Boji to fall back on.

Big name players often play in midfield and up front. We are blessed in that department and people flapping over a big name need to have a rethink over where we have come from. I would much rather us sign a Lescott for our back line than an Aguero up front. We need to evolve naturally and not superficially. There are far more things that need addressing than our global profile and the need to sit in the office at work and claim how amazing we are as we have (insert superstar player name) in our team. I would much rather be able to talk about how good we are as a team unit, how are solidity has made us a force. A superstar does not make a team, we have Robinho already, more than likely Tevez. We do not need to be an identikit model of the galacticos.

Edit: Ive just seen your save face point, save whos face exactly? we pulled the plug on Eto'o after learning from the Kaka debacle.

We already have Robinho, how old are you mate? It sounds like your embarrassed and it is you that need to save face to your rag loving mates.

Tevez is every bit as big a name as Eto'o AND without the tempremental baggage that Eto'o carries!
To say we can't land a big name is rubbish. We got Robinho and we weren't as 'prominant' then as we are now the fact that it was on deadline day certainly helped and the fact he was desperate to leave Real was also a factor but nevertheless he came!
The time to be critical is Sept 1st when the window has closed and we are struggling to win games.
Until then I have the utmost faith in the direction the club is going.
