We really do have the best fans in the world.

We need to get our younger fans in. Pensioners monopolising big game tickets because “I’ve done the hard yards” has to stop.
Will those who's done the hard yards still be able to gets in the Fulhams, Southampton and Sunderlands midweek and Group stage games if that's alright. There were plenty of youngsters there Saturday plenty of noise in the pubs silent in the ground.

2 post in 11 years with one slagging off our fans, my rag-ometre is going off the the scales.
'Sniff Sniff'
There has been a great deal of that the last few days and not just from those with very few posts. Hats off to those that got tickets and went. Hopefully we will be in another one very soon and have our full allocation.

For those that did the “hard yards” - York away, Lincoln, Stoke, Macclesfield etc, thank you so much.

They’ve been rewarded with 5 PL titles and all of the away games in them, 6 League Cup Finals, 4 FA Cup semis at Wembley, 3 FA Cup Finals, countless CL away games, 1 Champions League Final.

How much reward is enough for the “hard yards”?

At what point do we give the next generation the opportunity to put in the yards?

Supporting City was never about being in a closed-off, elite members club. It used to be about welcoming people in, not shutting them out.
Son in law was their 27 his cousin 23 if you wanted it enough you got in PS I out sung the pair of em:-)

Also this old vs young debate is silly, and I can only think it was brought about by younger fans who couldn’t get there and reckon they’d have made lots of noise.

Honestly, it didn’t matter what age you were, that atmosphere was always going to be the same with that lineup and the way the game went. Think the “older” fans were great as they usually are. (And i’m in my 20s)

Great thread attempt, but shit content. Still out in Porto, still singing, still loud and proud. City have owned Porto. The Riverside bouncing for two days. Even after defeat yesterday. Chelsea fans wouldn't know a party if it twatted them on the head.

Phenomenal support out here. More hoops jumped through than a fairground monkey just to get here.

So we couldn't be heard on the TV. So fucking what?

Fuck off.

Back to the Sangria.

No we don't. Our fans in the stadium were shite, let's be honest.
That could be there was not a fair share of FOCs from CBL3. No other club can boast of the undying and unchanging quality of the FOCs in CBL3. No other Bovril drinkers like 'em. Koolhand Muffin Khaldoon knows the club is blest.

I wasn't there and had the tv on mute so can't comment on the fans other than to state my admiration for the effort each and every one of them put in just to get there.

What I would say is that, with the best will in the world, fans need something to get them excited and the team selection, particularly the inclusion of Sterling, got things off to a bad start. Then, after 10 minutes or so, the writing was on the wall and it wasn't as if any player produced a single moment to generate excitement or even remotely suggest that we were threatening the Chelsea goal. If our fans were quieter than theirs, it's hardly a surprise.

Exactly right. The harbour side in Porto was rocking, the bus on the way to the ground was rocking, but the team sheet took the edge off and the first 10 minutes of the actual match did the rest. It was obvious very early on that we were going to struggle to break them down at one end, whilst getting shredded on the counter. The best we managed in 90 minutes were a couple of low fizzing crosses and that was pretty much it. Precious little for the fans to get their teeth into

So with that logic in mind how do 90% of away supports at the Etihad manage to massively out sing the home fans when presumably they’ve seen the team sheet and their team has struggled early on ?

Spot on. Got back to Manchester this am. Shit result but an unbelievable trip and our supporters have done us proud again.

Because that’s what away fans tend to do, especially if they’re huge underdogs in a game. I don’t want to make excuses but cup finals can be different atmosphere wise. Chelsea didn’t have the weight of expectation that we did and their fans fed off them not being favourites. It’s generally recognised that United have a very good vocal away support but they’ve often struggled to generate a great atmosphere at cup finals. My boss - a United fan - was at the FA Cup final in 2016 and although United won, he said Palace bossed the atmosphere that day.

You can dress it up how you want but it’s a truism that the younger you are the more boisterous and passionate you are generally speaking. Anyone who’s ever moaned about the atmosphere at our games knows that it’s down to too many oldies and on occasion too many corporates.

The atmosphere was great during the day - in the streets, round the fanzone, etc ... and for most of the pre-match.
The team news definitely felt like a blow, and led to lots of head-shaking in our end.

Then once the game started, I know this sounds defeatist but it had the feel quite early on that it wasn't going to be our day.

I agree in theory that the fans should drive the team not vice versa, but we're only human & if City had been winning & Chelsea blowing their big chance, I'm sure the noise would have been the other way round.

Yes, the young ones do often inject a lot of life into it but I’m 51 and I’ve started more chants than many fans half my age so it’s not an exact science. Also seen plenty of our fans - both young and old - bang up for it on the concourse at away games but then mysteriously lose their ability to sing once the game kicks off, then suddenly regain it again on the concourse at half time.

Where I was sat barely heard a peep from Chelsea until they scored. If it was different on TV it was down to where they had the mikes.
