So look elsewhere. Look Bosmans, look abroad. Take an educated punt on a kid coming in and making an impact straight away.

there are no quality defenders on a bosman. I would like us to look abroad however i believe Hughes is right in trying to find a decent leader who is accustomed to the league ie Toure.

As for lescott if Everton are taking the piss we should look abroad for a replacement as i feel there is no one else in the prem of the quality we need and are capable of getting. I would like us to go back to Hamburg and sign Jerome Boateng as he was outstanding in the 2 games we played against them and is only 20.

How many top defenders are there at 20 years of age? Think they need to be nutured a bit just like goalkeepers. And I can't remember the kid to be fair, but he wasn't up against much.
 
Players are out there that don't cost the ridiculous fees being touted at the moment. They may be unproven, come from clubs abroad or need a bit of development. But I'd back Wenger, Moyes and Zola to come up with better players with the money we'd give for Toure, Lescott and Upson. And they'd probably have a bit more left over for improving the rest of the squad as well.

Might just be that I don't rate the above three as highly as you do, but I think all would be easily replaceable at their clubs. Maybe Lescott the hardest, but we're talking a lot of money for him and we shouldn't forget that Moyes wouldn't have spent a whole lot more than £10m putting his entire back 4 together.

But not in the current market. Everton and Arsenal have huge debts to pay down - less than half the money they bring in will be given to spend on transfers. Arsenal want Huntellar but they cant afford his wages and Ac Milan want him.

This is the problem. West Ham are basically owned by the Icelandic goverment now - and they are effectively insolvent. All they want to do is get as much back for West Ham as possible. You think Zola will see any more than a few coppers from the sale of Upson ?

It will be very hard for them to replace like for like forget the fees its the wages they cant afford. Unless they can pick out players from the lower leagues or europe. Yes they have done it before but Everton couldnt even get a championship player with 40 games under his belt recently thats the degree to which they are struggling.

Personally I believe the players we are bringing in have greatly improved what we already have. Plus we have moved out a load of dead wood. Providing we get in the defenders we have been linked with and keep the quality we already have we should be a top 6 side this season. If we are not in 12 months time its down to Hughes and he will have to go.

We already have much better squads than Villa, Everton and Spurs overall.

i never meant a 1st choice john i was a bit vague. I meant on the assumption that we are in the market for 3 centre halfs.
 
I think it's a good point about the importance of experience and maturity when it comes to defenders. Johnmc is right. No 20 year old defender is the finished article.
 
I think we will finish 7th. Nothing to do with whoever we get in at the back, I just can't see our usual inconsistant performances ending this season. I think Hughes deserves his shot at getting us in the top 6 but I don't think he'll crack it this season or be around to try again the season after. Don't get me wrong, I'd be delighted if he could do it and hope he proves me wrong... but I have doubts about his ability to get a team performing to a top 6 / top 4 standard week in week out. Seen far too many shocking performances under him, losing against teams we should have rolled over. Better quality players just means we should be rolling over teams of a higher standard now but if you can't do it at a lower level...

So Ade, Tevez, Barry, Santa Cruz, Tourre and Lescott will make no difference to next season in terms of consistency? This is what you are giving us to understand? And Robhino, Kompany, Given, Zab, Weiss, Onuoho, and Superman will be no more effective with better players around them than they were last year?

i agree pam my comment was originally in reply to moomba asking about whether i thought we should sign 'the next big thing'. I think we should sign Toure and another centre with experience as well as players such as Boateng, Costa or Veloso .
 
I think everyone will agree its a very poor showing and will be completely Hughes fault if we dont finish top 6 with the amount of money that has been spent.

However I expect us to finish top 6 this season.

Personally I would have liked to have seen us in for Bruno Alves. Hes about as close to top draw thats available and might come and could be as good as Calvaho in our league.

It is for this exact reason why we need to start looking abroad, especially for defenders. no point paying 30 mil for lescott when he is worth 15 MAX!!! Id rather have proven chammps league defenders who fancy trying out the premiership for size, Mexes, Luisao, Maicon, lahm, metzelder

This is very very funny! Metzelder is a bad BAD player! He's dreadful for Real and equally dreadful for Germany. Hopeless! Mexes isn't good enough and I don't rate Lahm these days either (used to look good now looks bad) Maicon is a RB. That just leaves Luisao who is half decent but may be a major gamble which may not come off. Not a great list of possibles then ;)
 
On paper if we get lescott + say... Bruno Alves(hopefully), we would be a top 5 side on paper. But im not convinced that the team will gel that well, especially with hughes in charge, my expectations for this season aren't as lofty as some of the people on here.

Right, everyone who disagrees with you is a rag? I've got a right to my opinion, and if you'd bothered to read my post I was saying the problem is with the manager (and therefore tactics and motivation) and specifically not the players. I said the players we had last year were good enough to do better in some games and ended up losing.

The proof is in the pudding really. Villa used the money we gave them for Barry to sign downing.

If we give £20m for Lescott to Everton they might try and replicate what they did with him (and arguably Jagielka) in buying the best defender in the Championship, no idea who that is btw and hoping to come up trumps again.

Or they might manage to buy Chielinni for the same amount of money and the arguments will start as to who is best
