Lovingly, your local pessimist ; - )

Everton and Villa will be lucky to make the top 15.

I was expecting a bigger back lash than that. Everton will still be up there this year, they have Arteta coming back and that good tall Brazilian upfront. Villa will miss Barry so not sure about them.

Everton wouldnt find the market cheaper than what we are paying if they have £20m of our money in their back pocket. So they would have to either pay above the odds for a established Prem player, buy unproven from abroad, or buy someone of less quality.

Nothing wrong with buying unproven players.

The best players in the league were all unproven once.

Just need to move out of our comfort zone maybe.

Lescott, Toure, Upson all much better than the central defenders we have at the club at the moment. They would easily get into Liverpool and Arsenal sides. With those players our defensive pool will be as good as Liverpool and Arsenal overall.

Our forward line up is as good or better than Rags and Arsenal and you could argue Liverpool they only really have Torres. Our midfield is as good or better than the Rags and liverpool if they loose Alonso and Mascerano.

Villa have lost Barry, Laursen, Knight and possibly Ashley young will leave. They are brought in Downing who is inuured until December at least = massively going backwards and they were shit second half of last season anyway.

Everton have released half a dozen players, got jo back in on loan. Pinnar is refusing to sign a new deal, Jagielka will miss most of next season with his cuciate. Yakubu and Arteta missed most of last season with severe injuries - unlikely they will even be fit for the start of the season and when they are back unlikely to perform at their pre injury levels. They could not even sign a right back with 40 games in the cmahpionship. So they are going backwards as well and thats before we walk about them losing Lescott to us.

So can someone explain to me how we are in a worse position than these sides with the squad we have and players we are signing / have signed ? How are we going to struggle to get in the top 6 ?

to call Toure and Lescott mediocre is a bit ridiculous.

Probably a bit over the top, Toure may recapture his form of a few years ago and while I don't think Lescott will ever be a top defender he would improve the squad right now. But neither are in the class of a Terry or a Torres.

All i am saying is what was said earlier with the whole 'we give them money and they find a better or equally good replacement' debate. We should do what is right for us and sign players beneficial to us and not worry who arsenal or anybody replace them with. If anything we are not mugs in the transfer market so we will buy at the price we feel the player is worth and nothing more.

Like I've said a few times, I have no problem with us buying players from other premier league clubs. But we are being mugs in the transfer market if we pay for players significantly more than what they're worth, and give our rivals a huge helping hand in the process.

How can we be giving our rivals a huge helping hand by buying their best players? Most of them can't afford to use their transfer fees for anything except paying off their debts.

the issue city have is the players at the top top end of the market are not interest in city at the moment eg terry, torres, puyol. We need to buy the players the next level down this is where the likes of lescott and Toure are at. The prices we are going to are always going to be over the market value as we have the title of 'richest team in the world' which will mean teams will try to exploit us.

I agree that there is nothing wrong in taking a gamble now and again. Nothing wrong as long as they arent required to go into the first team immediately. We need a first choice defence to get us in the top 6 and above and have no where near it.

So established players first and then players who are young and unproven and deserve a chance to come in to see how they get on.

To say we will give Wenger £15m replace Toure and expect him to buy a lot better than Toure for much less to slot right into the team is a hell of an ask. Toure slotting into our team is a big ask but more likely to do it hence his transfer fee

Don't think thats the case at all.

Players are out there that don't cost the ridiculous fees being touted at the moment. They may be unproven, come from clubs abroad or need a bit of development. But I'd back Wenger, Moyes and Zola to come up with better players with the money we'd give for Toure, Lescott and Upson. And they'd probably have a bit more left over for improving the rest of the squad as well.

Might just be that I don't rate the above three as highly as you do, but I think all would be easily replaceable at their clubs. Maybe Lescott the hardest, but we're talking a lot of money for him and we shouldn't forget that Moyes wouldn't have spent a whole lot more than £10m putting his entire back 4 together.
