Trafford isn’t better than donnarumma with his feet for starters; also measuring mistakes that may occur, against a guy who outshines both Eddie and Trafford with shot stopping by some distance, evens the notion out…..

His long range consistency is clearly below Eddie but again measured against Trafford, is night and day, the kid struggles for distance under pressure, that won’t happen under donnarumma, just watch his PSG reel, he’s also got a true target in Haaland….

Eddie is our best ever keeper but because of the style that dictated, I’ve come around to having to evolve as Eddie will remain an anomaly in terms of consistency from playing out…

One thing is for sure, the command of his area against set pieces relaxes me no end and we may even keep a penalty out or 2….

Like for likes haven’t existed with Peps core players, invariably though, we’ve gone up a level!

Pep is not going to chance his entire philosophy of ball retention as a major point of defense.

Donnarumma is going to be a fucking disaster - because Pep will try to build out from the back with Donnarumma - who is average at best on the ball. This will lead to a flurry of chances for the opposition - which will lead to goals against us in spite of how good Donnarumma is at shot stopping while in his box.

This take - by-the-by - isn't some sort of idiotic one-off insane conjecture by someone who knows fuck all about football - instead - it's the take of virtually every single football pundit worth his or her salt on youtube.

Loyal? He refused a contract extension last year and psg have gone to market, he’d be still there if he’d signed it; he’s from the Riaola agency, who’s whole negotiating tactic is ‘pay what I’m worth’ or adios, you think haalands renewal was measly or locking him in?

The price point on Donnarumma left psg snookered after the initial wage agreement, hence they refused the proposed counter…

We get him for 4/5 years, doesn’t break our wage structure, coupled with the 12m for Eddie, and minus his own 200k a week wages, we got him for 14m, and an extra 50k a week, not too shabby….

We also needed to change it up as the system had to evolve, it may go tits but it was a necessity!

IMO the conversation about keepers playing out from the back falls down because everything gets lumped in together - when there's actually a few distinct skills.

- Picking the right pass out of several options to help the attack in 3-5 passes time. Seeing where there's mismatches or the opposition is out of space and giving it to the player who can take advantage of that more. Bravo was great at this at Barcelona (IIRC Pep went into detail in a press conference once in his first year and talked about why Bravo was a conductor of the whole team because he picks which side we attack down, whether we build up from short or the halfway line etc) and I think Trafford has this too.

- Being calm enough under pressure to not cock up or chicken out. Ederson great at this, Trafford not so much. Bravo failed here when he lost his confidence, Donnarumma's had some big blunders and apparently stopped trying to play out from the back because of them. Probably the area that changes most easily because it's confidence based and a few months in the rondos with outfield players should take care of improving basic things like touch and dealing with pressing.

Passing range and ability - The thing Ederson is undisputed king of. His passes are flat and really pinged, not optimistic punts into the right area. Trafford is better than most keepers but not in Ederson's league, Donnarumma IMO does not play any aerial passes *expecting* them to hit their target, they're just shorter hoofs. Not sure it can be improved much.


I think Pep thinks he can coach Donnarumma to be good enough at the first 2 that he's still helping the team build up and isn't an "old fashioned" bricks for feet keeper, and then the shot stopping should make up for the <10 goals a season Edersons insane passing got us.

Every stat that has been posted about saves to shots ratio has Donna last out of the 3 keepers.

I was quite surprised as I thought he was famous for being a great shot stopper.

The percentages were 66% for him, 68 for Eddie and it was either 78 or 82% for Trafford.

Trafford was by far the worst for passing.

You probably have seen it, it has been posted a fair few times.

It’s ok comparing keepers with passing out but surely it also depends on who they are passing out too and the quality of that player

We had prime Bernardo,Gundogan and De Bruyne

Now we have Gonzales, Reijnders and Bernardo!!!

Will give either GK a chance and will be happy for the best one to be in goal

But at the moment I feel more confident with Donnarruma

Rodri my friend, the best player ive seen, consistently in the last two decades, to take a ball under pressure, and normally at pace, and swat opposing players off like flies; there’s a reason the press was rejected by most against us, it wasn’t Eddie, it was invariably the big man, seen through the adaptations of teams when he wasn’t in there….

He can take a missile of a ball, shield and control tempo, which is when we attack like the Valkyries…

The percentages from the 4 KO games vs Liverpool and Arsenal in the CL last season: 84,6%.

Over the last 3 seasons in the CL: Ederson 67,4%, Donnarumma 71,9%.

Context matters: Trafford's saves are mostly vs Championship teams.

That is fine, but even at 71.9% it is hardly better than Ederson and people think he was poor at traditional keeping

If context matters, why just the CL stats on 4 cherry-picked games?

It wasn't really about Trafford, more to do with the stat that the best keeper in the world had a worse shot-to-goal ratio than the one leaving, when people were claiming that he would be a vast improvement in that department.

Who gives two effs about some pundits on YouTube. As both a player and a manager I've forgotten more about football than most of these wafflers will ever know. As for PSG their loss is our gain.
 
Conceded 4 goals tonight though it gets tough when your own defenders are finishing expertly against you.

Because Liverpool and Arsenal are the strongest teams in England, they are our main rivals. Donnarumma is the best vs the best.

AI calculated his saves to shots ratio in the KO CL games last season (all of them): 80,65%! Good luck finding someone better in the KO stages.
