My point is if Haaland chose us due to emotional reasons what's the point of a Release Clause which kicks in just when Benzema leaves. Why sign a half-committed player when we could have gone for Darwin Nunez or Harry Kane?

You're at it. Worst case scenario we have another couple of seasons to reassess the market, make a killing on Haaland, and get a deal sorted for the next best thing ***IF*** he actually wants to leave at that point. That's as bad as things can be for us, which isn't bad at all.

Are you being serious or a troll? First of all, Benzema’s last year of contract is his next one. His contract ends in 2023 and he has publicly spoken about going elsewhere afterwards. Get your facts straight. There is a reason that Real Madrid reportedly wanted Haaland to stay another season at Dortmund. HE DID NOT WANT THAT. HE WANTED US. When you sign a five year contract, the release clause (if there is one) naturally always kicks in after the third year, it’s the standard. I repeat to you, a release clause nearing €200M isn’t something clubs can afford let alone when you consider fees on top of that. IF it’s there, it is something Raiola pushed, and he isn’t here anymore.
Now you are telling me we shouldn’t have signed a player who has historical and emotional connections to us because at 21 he isn’t in charge of every aspect of his career and an agent was handling his contracts to his liking, and instead should have signed a player that is identified with another English club and didn’t have the guts to push to leave them? Or a player from Uruguay who doesn’t have connections and could easily push to leave in a few years? You cannot be serious

You're not alone in your doubts. This particular transfer could prove to be a mistake, of course. Only time will tell.

But a club with City's ambitions had to start making 'galactico' acquisitions sooner or later. If you want to sit at the table with the big boys, you have to compete for such players. It's a risk, but a risk worth taking

As per Google translate is slightly off.

From the start of the Bild article.

The rest of the article us behind a paywall.

Erling Haaland (21) moves to Manchester City with coach Pep Guardiola (51). The ink under the five-year contract isn't really dry yet, so the Norwegian is apparently already thinking about leaving. Haaland's spicy city clause! You can only read what is in his new contract on the island with BILDplus. And also what BVB intends to do with the Haaland coal.

Marca, Real Madrid's mouthpiece.

Haaland has just committed to City on a long-term contract until 2027 but clubs such as Real Madrid and Barcelona, who were keen on him this time around, will be able to make an offer to sign him from 2024.

Teabag(Tebas)

Javier Tebas isn't sure that Erling Haaland would fit in at Real Madrid in their current shape, in light of the Borussia Dortmundforward agreeing to join Manchester City.

"Obviously I would have liked him [in LaLiga Santander], but we can't have them all."

@anindyamcfc Also let’s be clear. By the accounts Raiola also wanted Real Madrid, Bayern, Barcelona etc all to put a release clause in the contract. So you would be calling those clubs stepping stones too? You’re acting as if it’s exclusive to us. IF he got that, it’s to protect the player, no to design a way out. Give it a little thought before overreacting (which looking at your post history you have a history of doing)

It comes with the territory of signing a superstar that other clubs will want him and more often than not, they usually want to experience different countries and have their heads turned.

We’ve done well keeping players throughout their prime, though, and avoiding them leaving to join one of those 2 in Spain so it’ll be interesting to see if Haaland does go after a few years or if he cements a legacy here.

Either way, the bloke hasn’t even been pictured in a City shirt yet and the topic of discussion is a possible release clause? Baffling.

Let’s just enjoy watching a ‘generational talent’ striker taking the piss in front of the best playmaker in the world for the foreseeable.

This is the “exit strategy”, to paint that clause as something it’s not. Pure PR saving face. What’s not clear is how any club would afford €200M + fees on a single player who would also likely be the highest wages of said club… lol
