West Ham (A) - EFL Cup R4 - Post-Match Thread

A strong team yet so many problems on full view. KDB, Mahrez and Sterling were all at best 5/10. Gundogan was no better. Remember the days when Fern used to smash in a shot from outside the box but now we are just pass pass pass.
True but Ferny I thought played well, as did Palmer and Ake. I do care about not winning this because I want to watch more City footy not less. Mahrez has so often had good days and bad so I don’t fret too much. Sterling has been struggling for a long while. Gundo is still getting his form back. Most concerned about Kev.

Not far short of a year ago, when we beat the rags superbly in the semi-final, I looked in on Redcafé. Someone posted “We've got bigger fish to fry”. Well, in the end, they had no fish to fry. The frying pan was empty.

I'll never, ever say that. I'm disappointed. Disappointed because on every single count except the result we distinctly dominated that match. Seven shots on target. Eight off. Not one in the back of the net.
Winning breeds confidence, and breeds the habit of winning.
Pissed off.

Sterling is shite, seriously shite. If he was a youth player coming through I’d tell you he’d never make it big.
The defeat though is on the manager although I have no argument trying to rest players but in my mind it doesn’t feel like a defeat nor should pep be blamed even though that team doesn’t fit the brief

It’s a good example of how he hasn’t kicked on.
He’s never going to be great in the air but with practice he should be capable of being decent when given free headers.

yep it was a free header 6 yards out and you have to score ? you head it down to one of the corners they teach you
maybe sterling was off that day the teaching of headers was on the rota

I feel like I was watching a different game. Thought overall it was a fairly even game.

can’t be to disappointed as we’ve won it for years, wasn’t going to last forever. Fair play West Ham

This season other clubs have taken it as seriously as we have done over the last 4 years. Even Klopp. It’s no longer that cup no club or their fans don’t want to win. City have made the Carabao Cup that.

Hate City losing any game and have loved our League Cup “run”. However it’s not the most important trophy for us hence Peps team. Hope we can go further in the Fa cup now and of course Champs League.

Hope West Ham go on to win the League Cup.

we played an incredibly strong team full of first team players. Only Cole Palmer was inexperienced and I thought he was one of the best players.

what’s the point in spending millions on players and not rotating the team

A disappointing result, but in all fairness we've seen it all before. We dominate the game, have loads of chances, don't score and get nothing.

We've won the CC enough times that I don't feel too bothered about it if I'm honest. And, yes, I know that sounds pretty arrogant!

I just wish we'd bought a competent striker - Danny Ings - for games like tonight. We don't need Mbappe, Kane, Messi or Ronaldo all the time, sometimes we just need someone who can make the right runs and score goals. I do think that a striker would make a difference and give the opposition something different to think about.

Overall, it's a "meh" result and if it allows us a little more breathing space to go for the CL and PL then we'll not think too much about it in May.

Not that disappointed to go out tonight to be very honest (would obviously have felt different if I had gone) but the manner of the defeat is a concern nonetheless.

For such a talented group of players our finishing is just horrendous and we don’t seem able to improve it - in 50/50 games it will probably cost us later in the season.

And unfortunately the malaise of Sterling and KDB seems to be continuing. These are two of our most highly valued assets and the club seems to be unable to reverse the rot. Surely it’s time to try something different with these two - i.e. take them out of the firing line for a bit - as whatever the approach has been for the past year obviously hasn’t worked.

Not the end of the world, and might actually help us later on in the season with the extra rest. But its a bit concerning that we are not able to score a goal (or even create many goal scoring opportunities) against West Hams reserves +3 regular starters. More than a few players are struggling to find form at the moment, KDB & Mahrez in particular. Dont count Raheem since I assume he is on his way out anyway and I have given up on that he would find form anytime soon.

It was nice to see Palmer get a start, best player from our side today.
What more concerning to me is the abysmal form of De Bruyne, Sterling and Mahrez.
