West Ham (H) | PL | Post Match Thread

We won't get slaughtered by Chelsea anyway . The wheels are well and truly off there. In fact we won't get slaughtered by any of them if Pep does his job properly and sets us up to be difficult to play through. Unfortunately he's unlikely to do that as he's just too stubborn. Yesterday a shining example. Walker and Gundog should not have come on. Give youth a chance Pep.
To be fair to Pep, he would be a good assistant coach next to you.

I thought our pressing game was notably better in the first half, bringing a lot more energy and directness. It's great to see improvements, but the defensive lapses are a real concern. Savinho’s defensive awareness does need to step up, especially with Gvardiol needing that support. If both wide players don’t track back, it leaves the center-backs exposed, which was evident in the match.

Foden’s efforts with Rico on the other side were ok in the first half, but it’s clear there’s a vulnerability.

It's a mixed bag, while the attacking play has shown improvement, the defensive issues are glaring and will be costly against sharper opponents.

Kovacic's positional discipline is crucial, and when he's pulled out of position, it exposes significant gaps for counter-attacks. The midfield's ability to cover and shift positions dynamically is vital in maintaining balance, especially against teams that capitalise on quick breaks. That's how we played up until Rodri's injury.

We need to make sure someone is always ready to fill in those gaps when Kovacic moves out of position.
exactly about the Kovacic situation. the team need Kova's moving up. it is Kova's best weapon, but someone must deliberately cover for him in those moments. it is not necessarily a particular player but a systematic rotation optimal for that moment. also the players next to Kova need to have good anticipation of when to burst for the interception. Kova can chase down or shut the door but needed a second player to recover the ball and transition quick. Kova's touch and follow ups are mostly with clear plan and supported by his acceleration and skill set. other players, typically Rico, either ran too much into a head bump into Kova or too conservatively positioned for the follow up recovery, or dont have proper skill set to pick the ball out timely and accurately.

I personally think we fans have every right to be disappointed and a little pissed about recent performance. Up until Leicester it was 1 win in 13 games which is absolutely abysmal for any side let alone reigning champions.
And I also think the fans have the right to voice the displeasure to the players, regardless of what they’ve delivered in the past.

However the players do deserve support too and as much as we give we should also be getting behind them, and also unequivocally do not deserve and should not be subject to personal attacks from anyone, that’s when it becomes an issue. Sadly some idiots cannot control themselves.

Sitting in the seat I am lucky enough to have I can honestly with my hand on my cold black heart say that I haven't heard any abuse aimed at a player this season other than "that's shit" or "WTF was that".

Social media however is rammed with people either wanting to take offence or cause offence, these miscreants can't be taken as the norm because most normal people are well..normal.

That’s the other important distinction to make.
This “hate” people mention and react to, where is it really coming from? I suspect, as you say, that the majority of it is accounts on Twitter and things being bellends because they can!

Just for the record. How many touches did Gundogan have? How many successful passes?
I watched the replay. I didn't actually count the passes but he didn't misplace any. He lost the ball twice (once from Akanji's hospital pass), won it once, forced another West Ham error, and was nearly always ready in space to receive a pass - whereas in the first half there often seemed to be defenders with no one immediately in front to give it to.

Gundogan may not be the fastest mover on the pitch (was he ever?) but I don't get the criticism of his performance in this game.

It was our relative collapse after the subs, more on Walker i suppose who got caught wrong side and was booked then was sleeping and cost us a goal, maybe on this occasion Gundo is guilty by association
