West Ham Post Match Thread | Friendly in Iceland

I think this is the team we ended with by the way.

----------------Ederson
-----Tosin--Fernandinho--Mangala-----
Walker--------------------------Zinchenko
-----Roberts-Foden-Bernardo-------
-----------------Diaz
---------------Sterling
Yep that was how it looked to me, with Roberts and Bernardo the other way round. I think initially after the changes we went back to last season's formation, and they got on top a bit, then he put Fernandhino between Tosin and Mangala, and we took control again.

I've never liked 3 at the back when I've seen us play it, in fact still have nightmares about Ajax away, when we looked like a pub team trying it, but today I liked, especially with how high up the pitch we played.

I'm sure a couple of the Hammers defenders will be telling Hart to shut the fuck up. What an annoying twat.

As for the game, it was like watching paint dry. If West Ham didn't want to play, they shouldn't have signed up to the friendly. That was God awful to watch.

I don't see why not, at least not in the big games. Against the parked buses, maybe not.

Flip that around and I'd agree.

A 3-5-2 in big games against better teams is a ticking time bomb. Those teams won't sit back, they'll exploit the space a back 3 offers.

In the games where teams park a bus, that's when it will work. It will overload the centre and give us width.

Agreed

Was tempted to go on flight tracker it was so poor

Still good measure of what we will face again this season

Pep after today's game: "I think we need someone else, something else, a little bit more." [@spbajko]

Mangala's just not going to turn it round, is he? Who can we give him away to, I wonder?
The kids look thoroughly convincing. I'd like to see them in some league cup games this year. Tosin needs to bulk up a bit, doesn't he?

"I think we need a little bit more" A little bit more as in AS or EM, boss?

A good run out against a defensive system we are likely to be up against in nearly every game this season.

Zinchenko and Roberts both looked good when they came on, both need to play regularly somewhere this season, Foden is sheer class and needs to stay in 1st team squad.

We looked pretty decent, but we were not able to penetrate their defence repeatedly like we were against Spurs. The opposition certainly played more defensively. The pitch also looked to be on the small side. Not a lot of space for the wide players to operate in. We're still not clinical enough in front of goal, which is my only major concern going into the new season. The fullbacks have made a huge difference and Danilo, in particular, looks to be well worth the fee paid.

Preseason games are supposed to help players fitness, how the hell can West Ham do that when they park the bus and don't move from their penalty area?

Results don't matter but the speed with which we move the ball now is fantastic to watch.

Very excited for the season ahead. Too soon to make the Brighton pre-match thread? Maybe I should wait until tomorrow ;)

He isn't a Pep player. Not in any way, shape or form.

He's just generally very untidy with the football. He looks like he's kicking a grenade, waiting for his fucking legs to be blown off. Statistically he may have better distribution than Stones, for example, but Stones looks like a player. A player than can be taught. Mangala doesn't look like he has it in him to learn.

Playing him in a back 3 in the league would be suicide. In fact playing him at all would be equally as bad.
