Six Miles From Home. About the Stockport air disaster in 1967 when 72 people died in a totally preventable accident. Very good read.
Not sure if you’ve read The Miracle of Castel Di Sangro or A Season With Verona, but if not I heartily recommend both of them.Currently reading ‘War Doctor’ about a doctor who has travelled the world undertaking surgery on the front line, so far so good.
Prior to that ‘Ultras’ by Tobias Jones and my next book will be Fear and Loathing in La Liga by Sid Lowe. I do like a football book which not only gives an insight to football, but also the history of the country itself. Both Ultras and the one on La Liga manage this.
That disaster is remarkably unknown in the UK, in Greater Manchester or even in Stockport itself, there’s very little even near the site to tell you it ever happenedSix Miles From Home. About the Stockport air disaster in 1967 when 72 people died in a totally preventable accident. Very good read.
I’ve lived much of my life in Stockport, and wasn’t even aware of the disaster until perhaps 10-15 years ago. That disaster is remarkably unknown in the UK, in Greater Manchester or even in Stockport itself, there’s very little even near the site to tell you it ever happened

Ha, wasn’t aware of that but not a great surprise, given the state of Italian football.I have, both fantastic books and I also really enjoyed Italian Education by Tim
Parks, which again gives a great insight into Italian culture.
The Miracle of Castel Di Sangro is probably my favourite football book of all time. I am not sure if you know this Ric but you may remember the author(Joe McGinniss) absolutely despised the Presidents son in law (Gabriele Gravina). The author hated him because he believed his only interest was to gain more power and fame, inferred he had affairs with the wives of the players and was responsible for match fixing - he is now chairman of the Italian football federation.
I know, it’s madness. Imagine if it happened in London or, dare I say Merseyside?I’ve lived much of my life in Stockport, and wasn’t even aware of the disaster until perhaps 10-15 years ago.

Very strange that it’s been relatively ignored.I know, it’s madness. Imagine if it happened in London or, dare I say Merseyside?
