Ham on Rye - Charles Bukowski

Blood Meridian - Cormac McCarthy

Two very different books but I highly recommend them.

Chinaski is great, in his way, really great. Like Kerouac with a sense of humour.
McCarthy is, however, without many peers. Coetzee, Odaantje, Hemingway?

Currebtly reading "you cannot be serious" - 101 most infuriating things in sport by Matthew Norman

I recommend this book, its brilliantly written and very funny.

Both are superb, mate.
If you like Bukowski, check out his favourite writer, John Fante. Specifically The Bandini Quartet, four similarly hilarious tales about a born loser's daily lowlife struggle in a single volume.
For some grisly Southern Gothic in the style of early McCarthy, particularly Child of God, then try And The Ass Saw The Angel by Nick Cave. Never was into his music but his novel surprised me, it is superb.
Just finished The Terror of Living by Urban Waite, a superior debut very reminiscent of No Country for Old Men.
Now on some vintage pulp/noir reissues from the superb US-based Hard Case Crime series. Wonderful stuff, right down to the hand-painted covers, usually featuring a half-naked broad with a gun.
