Why the fuck are the Eagles lauded as a great?

Two of the biggest selling albums of all time, big fan base, sell out concerts, individual members big selling solo artists.
Not really sure what criteria you need to be classed as great.

Loads of bands milk their fans, how many times will Roger Waters tour The Wall & DSOTM (Now even a re-make). He been at it since the 70s.

I'm not a Billy Joel fan, The Eagles ? I like some of their songs, don't own any of their records.

Ha I know. Bands that made good music once, that took chances and broke ground — hey, I have no issue with them flogging themselves and their tunes into the ground until Death takes them. Pink Floyd included.

But Joel and The Eagles never had anything to say, aimed their music squarely at a mass market opportunity, and now they’re rich without ever having moved their art forward. Nothing wrong with that per se — that’s capitalism — but I can and do hate them for their money-grubbing cynicism, and their music for being as bland and tasteless as a vanilla steak.

But live & let live. Music is in the ear of the beholder. You like what you like and should be able to like it without fear of retribution. (@The Colonel )
Some people love One Direction. Who am I to say they shouldn't, some kind of music snob ? :)

As far as having anything to say, why should they ? One of my top bands ever never said anything, it's all instrumental (Weather Report).

You can't tell white people they aren't supposed to like a song or two that comes on the radio.

I'm not really an Eagles fan but they're better than Boney M..

On balance, if I was told I was going to be trapped going up and down in an elevator for eternity and I was given the choice of one of those two, I think I'd take my chances with Boney M.
