What did Manchester City gain in exchange for Maine Road?

even if coms was owned by adug then any alterations would have to be okayed by the council/planning,police,fire,hse,transport etc .ownership does not mean carte blanche. If any company in the world knows property values and value for money then it is ADUG.On the opposite side you have the FA with the millstone aka wembley which might even have to be sold and leased back. arsenal need to fill the emirates just to pay the mortgage for the next several years, not guaranteed if the team falter through lack of cash.Away from football, there is a widely-held view that City ripped off the council,so on balance, putting up with rag taunts is a small price to pay for where we are today, and tomorrow, and ever and ever.Amen

People often talk of buildings as assets, when in fact it they are liabilities. As much as it pains me to say it Maine road fitted this category. it was a decrepid ground that required nearvenough full scale redevelopment. redevelopment that was restricted due to the close proximity of adjacent houses. the money we got for the place was more or less more for the land, hardly in a prime area I hasten to add. By moving we got a modern, purpose built facility, which cost us nothing more than a few million in refurbishment and rent when a certain amount of people pass through the turnstiles. This was at a time when we didn't have a pot to piss in. In answer to your question it gave us a stepping stone to greater things, as has been bourne out with the investment we subsequently received.

PERFICK.

Just always bugged me as a young'un (was 19 when it happened) and while excited it was never made clear (to me anyway) why we had to pay money to the council when the attendance went over a certain number when we gave them land we owned.

I already know about the 250 year lease and how it effectively means we do 'own' it to some extent. I just needed it putting into layman's terms to 'silence' a few United supporting buddies of mine. It gets tedious having the same banter of 'Council House' and 'Yew Don't own your stadium'

Need some solid facts and figures.

To be honest, I've seen these types of jibes die down of late as we are absolutely brewstered and they are millions in debt.

It's a moot point that Stretford own a piece of Trafford Park that they would have to sell in order to pay their debt's.

Quite simply, I'd rather have billions in the bank and rent a top class appartment in Manchester than live in my own house in Salford with fuck all to spend.......

What did we gain?

Look at Liverpool etc struggling like feck to find the money to build a new stadium. Then look at what an attractive proposition we suddenly became to new investors. Finally look at the bright new era on the horizon.

Finally smile and thank the lord you are a Blue :-)

It was the best deal available at that point in time and a once in a lifetime opportunity. Expanding Maine Road to our current capacity would have cost more than £50m; money we didn't have. Maine Rd had become a sad legacy of failed regimes Swales, Lee through short sighted developments over the decades.

Eastlands is a great stadium and it costs us c. £1m a year. It was and is a no brainer. Liverpool are stuck in an antiquated stadium (£350m debt) having not invested when they were great, Everton's ground is poor, no cash. We have a ground that is / we be as good as the Emirates once expanded to 60-65,000 once we put trphies in the cabinet. If with hindsight, this was a great deal for City. As for owning your own ground, the RAGS are £790m in debt; do they really own the swamp?...

If I remember correctly around the time, the Maine Road site was valued around £60 million, although that figure seems a little on the high side to me. ...

About £54 million too high! I am fairly sure its value was much closer to £5-£6million.

It may have been land but it was in the middle of a shit hole.

Me thinks you might regret that statement.

I for one had a happy childhood in that particular 'shit hole' !

That shit hole was my home during my entire childhood. And there are plenty of City fans who cannot say that.

Moss Side during the late 70s and throughout the 80s', less of a shit hole than where the current stadium is now.

M14 born and bred- and very proud of it, regardless of where I am now.

When people ask where I am from, I still say Moss Side, even though I left there 25 years back.
