Done that in a foot of snow carrying a bike...One of the maddest days out ever.
Shortly after New Year in the early eighties, three of us went up there on pushbikes, two of us on decent racers and a third clown on a Raleigh shopper 20- one of those wank women's bikes with small white tyres...lol
Got there, it was chilly but sunny. Went in the Nags Head for a Theakston's OP and a pie.
Decides to go in the Rangers hut to get out of the wind to roll a ciggy...Was in there for about ten mins when my mate who was familiar with place, came in and said we'd better hurry up and get off home..We'd only been there for about an hour and half. I walked out to him pointing up the valley..One of the most awesome sights I have ever seen...Snow clouds rolling in from the western part of the valley with a grey wall of snow underneath heading directly towards us painting everywhere white as it did so...By the time we got to the foot of the road that leads out of the valley and up Mam Tor it was around 8 inches deep with a strong gale behind it ramming it into my face. It was pointless trying to ride up it so we trudged to the top carrying the bikes. When we got to the top of the road we decided to climb over the style and get to the very top for one last look...Total waste of time...The wind was blowing the snow that hard you could barely open you eyes...Then got back down to the bikes to find the shopper 20 had a fucking puncture!
Had tow him all the way to Hazel Grove I think it was to find somewhere out of the wind to mend it..Then had to ride the 16 mile or so home to Wythenshawe...I believe I had the first stages of hypothermia..I was wanting to go to sleep behind a wall, but my mate knew the signs and talked me out of it.
