What is stopping us being one of the best in Europe?

We're still too slow in transition from attack to defence and visa versa. Sometimes too slow for league sides, which is why sometimes we concede a lot on the counter and then have trouble breaking through defensive lines.
 
In my opinion several factors contribute to our current lack of Champions League success.

1, seedlings/pot placement. We have had to contend with so far one outstanding team and one difficult team in the group. Bayern twice and Madrid once, Napoli, Dortmund and to a lesser extent CSKA although weaker, still a difficult away game. If we can avoid a European super power, top the group then extended participation is likely. If we'd have Chelsea's group & draw I'd have fancied us to do as well if not better.

2, Squad. As our continued involvement in the CL seems likely, I expect our squad to adapt. The likes of Lescott, Barry, Richards will be replaced by either top quality young talent or seasoned CL performers. Our squad is good, but fringe players lack the required experience.

3, Luck. A favourable draw, good officiatiopng in specific games and our key players remaining fit. I watched Athleti beat Barcelona, they got in their face, imposed their physical superiority over them something we couldn't do. The ref in that game allowed things to flow, something we all know we couldn't/weren't allowed to do.
 
Another defender as good as Kompany - hopefully more of a "Dr No" character
Another DM as good as YaYa/Fern - hopefully a "Driver" character
Another AM as good as Silva a "visionary" - so we can rest oneor the other in league game throughout the season.
Another world class forward who is available for 90% of the season.
Much more rotation to keep the players fresh so we stop doing the stuttering/stalling plane thing from Feb to Easter).

Saw an interesting comment on here the other day that said we haven't bought one top class defender since the takeover.

I think we're a left back, centre half and world class goal scoring midfielder away from being able to go into the latter stages of the CL with a huge expectation of going through.

Belief. That's all. Players are improving all the time in our squad. A bit of luck from injuries to our key players ,then what we have can take anyone. Don't want a signing in summer me. FFP can't stop us.

This we need to ship eight players out, and bring in as good if not better than our starting line up. Will take time and money
