What is the point of the Lib Dems?

Sadly the first sentence applies, although the second sentence should. If they managed to find themselves a charismatic leader untainted by the coalition government they could surprise a few people. Not sure that person exists.

Maybe Chukka will make the move?

They are a home for quite a few party members according to the official parliament website

Membership of UK political parties
Published Monday, September 3, 2018
As of April 2018, Labour had 540,000 members, compared to just under 125,500 SNP members as of August 2018, and 124,000 Conservative members reported in March 2018. As of August 2018, The Liberal Democrats had 99,200, Green Party 39,400, UKIP 23,600 and Plaid Cymru 8,000 members. Party membership has risen notably since 2013, both in total and as a percentage of the electorate.ghgh

That is what my post was suggesting but that isn't necessarily something I think will happen

That said, he clearly doesn't fit with the Corbyn version of the Labour Party so you never know but I can't see it

I suspect the Lib Dems would take him, given their perilous state, but it would be an ill fit.

Would you expect him to trigger a by-election if he did?

An alternative. Unfortunately, and this thread proves it, too many voters are set in their way and would never change their vote.
