What is your favourite hymn?

Can't believe no one has said Give Me Joy In My Heart! We sing it every game FFS. Although we alter the words a bit.

Give me joy in my heart, keep me praising
Give me joy in my heart, I pray
Give me joy in my heart, keep me praising
Keep me praising 'til the end of day

First hymn at @BlueAnorak's wedding last weekend. Chosen by his new wife bizarrely, who had no idea of its significance. All the Blues there had a quiet smile to themselves.

Having gone to school at the monastery and being made to sing it at each assembley and in the 2-3 weekly masses we went to at lunch the ode to St Francis is etched into my mind when the word hymn is mentioned.

Also a good catholic hymn, not of that prodestant shite :-)

It Is Well with My Soul - Horatio Spafford.

When peace like a river attendeth my way
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say
It is well, it is well with my soul

Refrain:
It is well (it is well) with my soul (with my soul)
It is well, it is well with my soul

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come
Let this blest assurance control
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate
And has shed His own blood for my soul

My sin, O the bliss of this glorious thought
My sin, not in part, but the whole
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend
Even so, it is well with my soul

In 1873, Spafford was due to travel to England from his home in America. He was delayed on business, so sent his family on ahead of him. During the sea crossing, their ship collided with another ship and sank. All four of Spafford's daughters tragically died. Spafford later received a telegram from his wife saying "Saved alone".

Spafford was inspired to write these words shortly afterwards, when he went to meet his grieving wife, and as he passed near to the place his daughters died.

22 November of this year marks the 150th anniversary of this tragedy.
