What make of dog for a beginner?

A Staffy might suit your requirements, they are lovely dogs. Don't, please don't get one of these new stupid Cockerpoo, labradoodle or what ever stupid name they now give a cross breed just because it does not shed hair. You will not know its temperament, health or anything.
Aside from the hair shedding, English Setters are gorgeous dogs.

Breed depends on your lifestyle, even in retirement.

- are you able/willing to walk it every day? multiple times a day?
- are you intending to go away on holiday at all?
- do you have grandkids?

I would +1 on a staffie myself. Short hair, needs exercising but absolutely top dogs for people who aren't cunts. Soft as fuck if you treat them right.
Happy to walk regularly and no grand kids yet. Can't see regular holidays abroad as a regular feature and just bought a static caravan.

Oh and as someone else says. Don't get one if you don't want to go out twice a day on a 30-40 minute walk, (you can each do one walk a day) If you 'board' him whilst you go on holiday abroad it will cost you £15-£20 A DAY.
They are hard work for the first year so do not get one if you are not interested in spending time with them.

Oh and do get insurance. Something will go wrong, it always does and the vets have to pay the loan back after 7 years training so they charge the earth.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like hard work..
They are but worth every bit of it.
They don't yap like smaller dogs. They are calm and friendly, sociable, creatures.
Something like a cross, a Labradoodle has the placid nature of the Lab but doesn't shed, ike a poodle. They're a lovely dog but a bit daft.

I hate those pedigree mongrels. Brother in law has a labradoublecocklepoodledoo or something. The size of a pony and totally thick/mental.

Agree, Staffie are wonderful pets. It's just skinheads in the 70's got them a bad name.
