What would you do with £100k?

Madness. He'll never get his money back.
Madness you say, always liked a bit of Madness. Its not about getting any money back, its about having a place in the sun to enjoy several times a year. Then when you pop your clogs, you pass it on to your family for them to enjoy.

He hasn’t got any kids. Passing it on or any money for that matter to nieces and nephews etc wouldn’t interest me.

If this is spare money that you will never need, I would spend it.

My mate lived in the South. Married a girl from a rich family. The girl's family home was big with a bit of land and stables and she had a horse. He married for love but as the years went by he thought his wife would inherit the house. Time does go by and sadly the girl's mother died. The father then retired and went on holiday after holiday and spent all his cash and sold off the house and ended up renting a one bed flat. He died on holiday abroad and my mate got invoiced from what he thought was the father's girlfriend but she described herself as his personal trainer. She wanted paying for the time she spent with the father on holiday. My mate paid and was secretly impressed that the bloke had managed to spend about a million on himself.
I like the father's style. No point being the richest person in the graveyard. Couldn't do it myself; my nieces are going to be minted.

First speak to a professional (Financial Adviser) but if you want some advice from the good folk of Blue moon here's my 2 penneth... I wouldn't use it all to buy a house outright but put a decent deposit down and mortgage the rest and rent it out, as you have no mortgage you could get a mortgage against it (it's a bit sneeky but not a buy to let mortgage either just a normal one which isn't 100% cosher thing to do I know but who would know you were renting it)
If you are letting via an agent then they have to inform HMRC. Obviously you could do it yourself but be aware of the attendant risks.
