Sliced bread, so people would have to come up with best thing since .........

You've got this backwards.

People already try to come up with the best thing since sliced bread, hence the expression.

If you uninvented sliced bread people wouldn't have to come up with the best thing since sliced bread.

On the whole, nuclear weapons have been a good thing as far as preventing a 3rd world war is concerned.
I was formulating a response like this whilst reading through the thread.

Have nuclear weapons saved more lives than they have killed? We will never know, but if they haven’t, they’re not much of a deterrent and we could use that Trident money elsewhere.

I think it’s more him asking what the new phrase would be.

Thats the best thing since vulcanised rubber was accidentally invented.etc.
