I've been to the US Open and have seen one of favourite athletes (McEnroe) play in his heyday at some peripheral tournament in the UK. I was in Atlanta and had tickets to some Olympic events in 1996. I've also experienced American football, basketball and baseball games - the latter being without doubt the most tediously boring if you're not supporting one team, but the most exciting sporting event I've probably ever witnessed was a second tier ice-hockey match in Mobile Alabama!
It was contested between two minor league teams, one of which was the Mysticks, and was like something out of the film 'Slapshot'. The teams were fighting throughout the match, and even after the final buzzer went! It was unreal, and very exciting - not simply from the charged atmosphere, but also from the actual play which was very tight in terms of score and the action fast. Sadly, the Mysticks are no more, and the franchise was bought/moved to another city in 2003.
I can believe everything that's been said about 'Slapshot', including that Newman had the most fun making it out of any of the films in his long career. Hilarious film, and quite possibly one of the best 'sports movies' of all time - very similar to what I witnessed one evening in downtown Mobile Alabama, of all places...
