Whats the most useless piece of technology ever invented ?

Its not so much useless as has a bad target market. No matter what people say they plan on using it for they would be better off using something else.
For instance surfing the web - better using a laptop
watching a film - TV/DVD
can anyone actually think of a good use for it

digital photo frames.

Also, why do they put two buttons on a car remote control fob? One button would be a lot easier. If the car's locked, press button and it opens. If it's open press same button and it locks. Simple.

There is a reason why they use two buttons. It's because of the "bouncing" effect of all mechanical switches.

Bouncing is the tendency of any two metal contacts in an electronic device to generate multiple signals as the contacts close or open

So when you press ones, it it might register as being pressed and released and pressed again, and released, and so on. So if you have only one button to both unlock and lock, and it's not "debounced" you would get very frustrated when you try to go in your car. Instead of adding a debouncing circuit, two buttons are used to fix that problem. They still bounce, but they do nothing. Some remotes might only use one button if they debounce the switch, but its easier and cheaper to use two switches. Plus some people would get confused with only one button :)
I should add that the bouncing occurs in the millisecond range.

debouncing is any kind of hardware device or software that ensures that only a single signal will be acted upon for a single opening or closing of a contact.

as mainstream products go the Sony Mini disc thing must be the worse. Or at least bad timing?

They released it with a pricey cost tag and then not long after the mp3 player came along and just made it useless

Self dimming rear view mirrors in cars.

They work when they want, and when they do they are too damn slow!

It takes a fraction of a second to reach up and flick over the old style mirrors.
