The Lancaster Bomber wasn’t built in Urmston (probably at AVRO in Chadderton as someone posted earlier) but it was designed by Roy Chadwick from Urmston, he originally called it the Manchester – much better idea – and also designed the Halifax Bomber. There is a pub named after him in the town centre. Another pub is named The Tim Bobbin (‘Spoons) after the 18th century Lancashire dialect poet.
Urmston can also claim;
Professor Tom Kilburn, who was part of the team that built “Baby†the world’s first programmable computer
Michael Johnson
Sir Arnold Wolfenden – Astronomer Royal
Marshall Stevens - Manchester Ship Canal
Herman’s Hermits
Matthew Kelly
Lynda Barron (Nurse Gladys in Open All Hours)
Eileen Derbyshire (Emily Bishop from Corrie)
Leslie Hoare-Belisha (of Beacon fame)
Dave Ward - radio DJ
Peter Collins – speedway rider
Charles Ewart – Standard Bearer to the Duke of Wellington at Waterloo
The rags used to have a number of club houses in Urmston, Flixton and Davyhulme in the ‘60s and 70s I’m afraid to say. You would often see Jordan, McQueen and Daly on the piss in the Red Lion in Flixton and my mate Dave once gave Brian Greenhoff a whack on Moorside Road with the cry of “This is a case of the fan hitting the shitâ€.
