I agree we still are in with a shout. Despite the win at Wembley - I felt flat / empty and deflated last night driving home from Anfield, especially after seeing the other results. For the first time in ages I was angry at having paid £52 for my ticket + my sons ticket + travel etc..... I am not sure why I felt this because watching football as a hobby is an expensive pass time. A number of people I know who have gone for years have made similar comments to me. Some even deciding not to go to forthcoming games when they have gone for years to every game. I am not sure if this feeling is broader in the away fan regulars but its a reflection of the mood with quite a lot of people I know. Anyone else have a view ?
I recall having a similar conversation with you at Sunderland last season mate, and for the same reason, I didn’t attend last night.
Some of it is down to age, but even at Wembley, I found myself counting the cost, and justifying everything, because at the end of the day, we won.
Awaydays just aren’t the same, and every defeat is like a dagger through the heart. Funny, because when we were shite, some my favourite ever games were drubbings at Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea. I was there at York, and still smile at the drunken memories of a 5-1 defeat at Fulham in 84, the march to Millwall in 87, the 6-0 defeat at the Baseball Ground, the 4-0 home defeat to Sunderland, the 4-1 collapse at Grimsby, and the countless "Swales Out" demonstrations.
Also, there’s a growing drug culture, not just at City, but definitely becoming a major concern. It’s being ignored, and anybody who dared even hint of intimidation at West Brom, Burnley, or Palace last season was instantly slaughtered on this forum.
As for the tempo we look slow and passionless, and it’s been creeping into our style, from as far back as the Wembley victory over Sunderland, when two fantastic strikes camouflaged our overall lethargy. Yes, we finished Champions, but even at Goodison, we took our foot off the gas, and almost threw away victory against disinterested opponents.
This isn’t the worst ever City team, but it’s the most expensive. I’ve seen around 1200 games, and had some great times, but frankly my enjoyment levels are diminishing rapidly.
