Whelan, Fayed and the others ruining football

Can I be cheeky and ask a simple question(s) then please.

Is it acceptable for ANY team to put a second string team out motivated by the attitude that they arent going to win in any case so let rest the first choice players? IN other words is it OK to give in and not compete?

This is up to the National governing body to decide. You have to protect the integrity of the League, but as Mick McCarthy said, his sole responsibilty is to the players/staff/supporters of Wolves, and it's up to the manager to decide what's best for them. By the way, apologies for hijacking your thread with my talk of a European Super League, but I share some of your concerns about the way the Premier League is developing, and a ESL would answer some of these concerns, so in a way, I thought it was relevant.

Hijack away..NP.

I would personally be ashamed if my club were ever to have had such a stance towards a game and would say so publicly.

Part of my reason for being a City fan (and perhaps I am being overly simplistic here) is because of the honesty of effort.

This may sound harsh, but this is a European Super League we're talking about here. As I explained earlier, I would allow the provision for the smaller nations to have the possibilty to make it into Division 2 of the Super League via a seeded play off. To be honest, I could see these play off games becoming massive games in their own right, with the later stages being big Box Office when you bear in mind the prize at stake.

you can only have one winner a year, and i think a lot of clubs trophy cabinets would be bare including the big named teams. Think that would affect a lot of clubs history records. No more FA cup winners no more Prem league winners or Serie A winners or La Liga. All the so called big clubs would be fighting for one prize a year.

Yes, but what a prize! To be undisputed Champions of Europe, competing against the best teams week in/week out. Something the Champions League just can't produce because it is basically a knock out competition. In theory United could win that competition without playing Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, Arsenal, Inter Milan, etc, etc.

I personally think the misnamed Champions League should be just that, as it used to be.

It would solve the fixture congestion as well.

But I am using an old argument there of course and one that doesnt create as much money only worthy winners.

Well each to his own imo it has a lot of problems to be sorted out and will not be good for the overall game called football.I mean as you said it should go on what happens on the pitch so when the likes of Blackburn win the Prem and gain the right to be in the SL how exciting is that, A half empty BR ground against Barcelona

Realistically, a team like Blackburn are never going to win the Premier League again, as long as clubs with infinitely more resources continue to dominate, which they will. Even if a rich owner comes in, the gap is so massive that it takes years to catch up, and a club like Blackburn, with all due respect, will find it extremely difficult to attract the quality players that it will take to bridge the gap. The Premier League has moved on since Jack Walker's day. Ironically, the ESL may have the effect of producing a much more competitive domestic competition, with the big clubs removed, which goes some way to addressing fbloke's op.

To paraphrase the great Bill Shankley, if Bolton and Blackburn were playing in my back garden I'd close the curtains.

Ah yes, the great Bill 'Shankley'. He started his career at Preston North End, one of those 'unfashionable' clubs that obviously wouldn't be part of your European Super League.

-- Wed Mar 31, 2010 7:09 pm --

Nothing arrogant about what I'm saying. I imagine if there was a break away super league formed this summer, City would be in it. There's nothing arrogant about that.

Why don't we base it on the number of cup finals a team has reached since the Premier League was formed? So that's Bolton, Blackburn and Wigan in. City out.

Lets put it to the public vote.

Ooops that United out then, lol

Even within a so-called 'European Super League', some teams will have bigger budgets than others. That will have the effect of creating divisions within the league that are no different to the divisions within the Premier League. Can you honestly see the likes of Bayern Munich voting to leave a position of dominence within their own league just to make up the numbers in your shiny, new, 'let's invent a competition that City can win', European Super League'?!

Lets invent a competition City can win? Your having a laugh aren't you? Real Madrid, Barcelona, United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Inter, Milan, Bayern Munich, the list goes on, all in one League? As for Bayern Munich voting for it, when they see the financial projections you'd have to fight to keep them out. Face it, this is coming sooner or later.
