When did English football clubs stop playing dinosaur football?

Fergusons game if I remember was get it to the wingers and put a cross in or cut inside if I remember correctly, the United way
Yeah and the cutting inside only came along towards the end when he had Shrek, Ronaldo and Tevez, none of whom were blessed with a left foot.

Simple answer is after Pep arrived.

I still recall the murmur around the ground in the first league game at home to Sunderland where the centrebacks pulled wide for goalkicks. Nobody did that. You'd occasionally get one player coming deep, but even then it was pretty much just the fullback launching it instead of the keeper launching it.

Pep has taken total football to another level. It was a rare sight to see possession-based football in England before the modern era. The only teams I remember playing that way were Clough's Forest (but they still used wingers); Ipswich under Bobby Robson; and the 1980s' Liverpool side. All these teams had success in Europe playing a "European" style.

I guess the other biggest change of the PL era was when Wenger arrived. His methods and style impressed everyone, but they didn't really change many other teams to play that way. Indeed, many teams responded by becoming even more route 1 and by trying to kick them out of the game to stop them playing that way. Which at times succeeded, so the playing style perhaps wasn't as influential as it could have been. The main influence Wenger ended up having was dietary/professionalism etc.

style of football has roughly been the same for decades, sure you had 2 forwards rather than 1 back in the day, and less teams passed out from the back. other than that it's not much different. what has changed is the quality of players, fitness and having the ability to make better ranges of passes.

Nobody had ever previously witnessed what Pep brought to the PL.. It was unique and it’s now the bench mark for the rest..
I do agree though about the fitness levels, quality of players and I’d add modern nutrition protocols to that list too.

City played fantastic football under Mancini.well before Pep arrived obviously.2nd season Mancini ,Silva,Yaya and Sergi couldn't play hoofball if they tried.
The Ipswich Town Side of late 70s and early 80s played a fluid passing game which destroyed many a team on a great Portman rd pitch, most noticeably when they trounced utd 6-3 at Portman rd with their keeper Bailey saving 3 pens. Could have been 9.A great game of football that.

People easily forget about Norwich City playing great attacking football ,again, well before Pep turned up on these shores.Mark Bowen Robert Fleck at.. can't remember the years tho...other players whose names i cant recall...getting old..short sharp passing moves with great movement off the ball..

.i can remember utd going Carrow Road one Sunday pm, live on sky, fergie,as manager, showing great tactical skill, put Paul ince as sweeper...result utd 1 down inside 5 mins.! Ince moved back into midfield...that's how feared Norwich were at Carrow Road at the time...Games between Norwich under Clive Walker were often a culture clash of great passing football, and hit it down the wings and chase from utd, iirc.

Southampton under Lawrie Mcmenamy with Keegan, Ball, Steve Williams Ivan golac etc played great football.late 70s.

West ham under John Lyalll ...Trevor ,Brooking and Alan Devonshire were great to watch, esp at home.

In my opinion, lots of diff teams played good passing football in this country, but as the OP hints ,an awful lot more played kick and rush.

It was Arsenal under Wenger, and not Swansea who broke the mould consistently and successfully ,imo

I struggle to muster much enthusiasm for any game when City aren't involved. I'm sure you can put some of that down to bias, but I think we've been spoiled in the last seven years with the fayre that's being served up by our bunch of money grabbing mercenaries. Even when we're "shit", we're so far advanced technically from the majority of the league. At a push, if we're talking entertainment, I can probably watch Arsenal (they were very good last season, to be fair), Newcastle, Brighton and Villa (Emery improved them hugely, irrespective of their fanbase).
