When does The Wire get good?

I'm 5 episodes into season 1 of The Wire and so far my wife has fallen asleep before the end of 4 of them. I'm 'kind of' enjoying it in the same way I used to 'kind of' enjoy an episode of Columbo or Murder She Wrote, but it's not blown me away yet and I'm certainly not hooked like I was with 24, Prison Break or even Breaking Bad.

Just wondering when it's going to turn into the 'best TV show ever made' that so many think it is?

I'm halfway through season three & I still think it's not that great. I also fall asleep whilst watching most episodes.
 
The first season is a bit slow to begin with. Stick with it as it is definitely worth it. Season's 3 and 4 are the best TV i've ever watched.
 
If you don't like it I suggest just finishing there and then.

I don't like not finishing things I start, and I miserably finished 4 seasons of Sopranos before realising "yknow what... This show is hugely over rated", and moved on.

So many better shows out there, and I tend to find, if they're going to be ones you like, they'd have gripped you by episode 4/5. For someone who watches a lot of TV shows I can't think of an example where this hasn't been true. Maybe Trailer Park Boys. Took 5-7 episodes to really start to enjoy that. Then again, there was always something which made me go back for more, even before I "knew the characters" etc.
 
The Wire is talked up a lot.

Personally I thought it was pants and after episode 3 I realised it was time to quit on it.

Some friends and family can't believe I thought it was shit...maybe they have been brainwashed into thinking it is better than it is?
 
It's a slow burner, but if you're not into after 5 episodes, maybe you're just not cut out for it?
 
I always thought it was overrated, but then watched it when it was repeated, and I was left thinking 'what was I thinking first time round?'. Great, great programme. I would suggest tha if you are falling asleep watching it then you are probably someone who enjoys Ant and Dec's Saturday night shite, or X Factor, or Keith Lemon - someone who doesn't really want to think about TV. Whereas if you don't like it, then that's fair enough - each to their own.

Its all great IMO, took me about 3 or 4 episodes to get into it, but season 4 is the pinnacle - great telly.

5 in, if you dont already like it you might want to move onto something else.

The Following is the best show on TV at the minute.

Predictable and totally outside the realms of realism. IMO, The Following is stuffed into the Lost/Prison Break category.

It was so tedious. Nothing much happened. Plus, many characters were left undeveloped which made them pretty incoherent in my opinion.
 
Honestly , I would watch season 3 first. My wife wasn't into the 1st season either so i skipped to 3 and she was able to go back and get through the 1st 2 after it. 4th season is not as good as 3 and 5th has its high points but I hated one of the main storylines. At the time I thought the most unbelievable part with Omar ruined it but read not long ago it was actually something the guy based on Omar did so it sorta saved the season for me.

3,4,1,2,5 is how I have the seasons ranked

Thanks for that Q.R. I`ll leave it ,found both of them okayish to start with but what a load of old bollux by season 2 .

The Wire is one of those shows you`ll either get or not get . It shows you how every facet of drug dealers ,cops and there anguish trying to get the money to arrange busts, and the political spectrum that gives the money to make busts and make the career politicians that we see today . Makes you question how people get what they want out of life ,with the tools they are given . Good and Evil and just how different we are`nt .
 
When you realise the acting, script, cinematography, and storyline are top notch.

You do have to almost learn another language to get the finer points but it's well worth the effort.

Great telly.
