When many of the council estate pubs disappeared

Back in the early 80's it was possible to do a pub crawl on my way home from work, halfway up Union St to the middle of Chadderton never did it fully but there was 11 pubs on my route of just under 2 miles.

I could drive now and still be safe if I had a half in each one.
Moston Lane from Harpurhey end upwards there was the
The Bricklayer Arms*
The Old Loom*
The Mowers Arms
The Ben Brierley*
The Museum*
The Blue Bell
The Church Inn*
The Gardners Arms

Not lived in Moston for 10 years so no idea which few remain.
* definitely gone

Use to see a girl up there years and years ago and drank in a few of them. There was an old man pub too called The New Broom if memory serves. Few others i've long since forgotten too. Remember people always going on about how tough these pubs were and to be wary but never had a moments trouble in any of them. Full of blues as i remember. That's one thing i always remember about Mid was that it was a City town just as much as say Wythenshawe where i grew up. Rochdale though was full of rags and dippers who didn't give a shit about the dale unless they got a good cup draw.
My Dad and his Brother’s were regulars in The New Broom and The Cardinal’s Hat

I worked at British Aerospace, we used to go in the Gardeners every friday lunch.
I came out of my time and as was the custom i invited everyone out for a lunchtime pint.
They bought me a few pints of vodka an orange which i had to down in one.
Never been so ill from booze in all my life.
That was 36 years ago and its only recently I started drinking shorts again.
Happy days
