I'm not really here
I seem to remember reading about Man Ure being heavily invested in, perhaps around the early 90s, enabling them to spend heavily in the transfer market etc. Now we have a lot of rags complaining about City trying to 'buy' trophies etc. I'd like to be able to state factual information to point out that they also 'bought' success. Can someone give us some clear factual information on this, which can be used to explain the situation to U****d supporters and fans of other teams?

Also, I know they have spent big on players (breaking the transfer record with Ferdinand etc). Can someone post some factual information on this too?

Cheers, and sorry if there is already a thread about this - I couldn't see one.

One lot came from Louis Edwards selling dodgy meat to school children.

Then they became a PLC and got a huge injection of cash via a share issue. Plus at about the same time the Premier Greed and European Not Champions League were formed and because they happened to be one of the top teams they were bathed in cash, which helped them remain one of the top teams until today.

Yeah it was the shares issue. Thing is though they were winning stuff up to it, and thats why many have a problem with us, because we are 'buying' success where there hasn't been any. Not that I care, infact I love how it winds people up to be honest.

Talking of United and money, I was talking to my ex's husband yesterday who is a rag, and he was saying that Companies House lists United as having excess money of £160m, which he thinks will be used for transfers.

Not sure where they've got the money from to get De Gea for £17m either.

God knows what's going on with their finances behind the scenes. They could possibly be running of their income/profit alone I guess.

Probably half of it, but £80 million is a minimum of what they'll need if they want to replace all their oldies!! It just goes to show what Chumps League footie brings in. Big money....

Aaaaarrr, the old transfer 'war chest' we've been hearing about over the past 2yrs.

It would appear their fans seemed to have bought into it.

I'm awaiting the second coming of the Red Knights anytime now....

Before the shares they were spending, anybody remember the 'crazy summer spending' in the late 80's that brought in Pallister, Ince etc, think they broke 2 transfer records in that summer, totalling summat like £14m on new players, unheard of back then.
They bought Ferdinand for money no other club could afford, same with Veron, and The Horse.

I remember them signing Andy Cole for 7m and thinking 'fucking hell that's alot', and funny enough they didn't complain about spending, come to think of it they didn't complain about Roy Keane record signing, Ferdinand, Rooney, Veron, Van Nistlerooy, Forlan etc they must have brought those players through their youth system?

This ABU thing is spot on it means 'anyone but united are not allowed to spend millions'.

oh dear

they went 26 years without winning the league yet they had the fan base from the 60's onwards, why did all these worldwide fans suddenly start supporting them ?

Your spot on! Why did you think Liverpool fans still felt jealously towards the scum! When they had been winning titles for twenty odd years while the scum win the odd cup here or there! 1958 put em on the map! They av milked it to that day to this day__________

I think the buying success argument is totally bogus. There have always been clubs with more money in football, but the differences throughout the top division were minimal.

Financially, United are now three times the size of clubs like Aston Villa and Everton - scary when you think that Villa and Everton are themselves bigger than most clubs in the Premiership.

The money came from:
1. Gate receipts no longer being split between teams (so the bigger clubs got to keep their home gate) - this happened early 80s so by the end of that decade, the big clubs were much more secure. As united have increased capacity they (and Arsenal) are making huge amounts that no other clubs can match.

2. Sky cash - the huge amounts involved meant that the difference between being top of the Premier League and near the bottom was worth extra millions each year (now tens of millions).

3. Chumps League - again worth millions and now worth tens of millions each year.

4. More commercialisation - clubs are better at screwing cash out of us. With the "EPL" being a global brand that's even more money - but of course a few top clubs get the most exposure and make the money.

So - it is legitimate to say that United initially made their money by being successful, but once the money starts rolling in, then it becomes self-sustaining. They are not finishing above Everton each year because they have a better team - they are finishing above them because their budget at the start of the year is three times the size of Everton's.

Initially they were the big club in the right place at the right time. Success meant money. Now the money has accumulated to such a level that it guarantees success which makes them more money and they stay top of the pile.

There is no way we could catch United without a huge injection of cash. They are simply too big a business now.

And this is how they started off their ground improvements.

"In the 1960s many English grounds were improved in readiness for the 1966 World Cup. Manchester United received a grant which helped fund the building of a large new cantilever stand on the ‘popular’ (United Road) side of the ground."

They've always 'ad money. They were bombardin' the transfer market in the sixties with money. Dennis Law - we paid £55k, British record, sold him to Torino for £110k, and just twelve months later MANUre cough up more than twice what we paid - £115k
