Yeah it was the shares issue. Thing is though they were winning stuff up to it, and thats why many have a problem with us, because we are 'buying' success where there hasn't been any. Not that I care, infact I love how it winds people up to be honest.
I think the buying success argument is totally bogus. There have always been clubs with more money in football, but the differences throughout the top division were minimal.
Financially, United are now three times the size of clubs like Aston Villa and Everton - scary when you think that Villa and Everton are themselves bigger than most clubs in the Premiership.
The money came from:
1. Gate receipts no longer being split between teams (so the bigger clubs got to keep their home gate) - this happened early 80s so by the end of that decade, the big clubs were much more secure. As united have increased capacity they (and Arsenal) are making huge amounts that no other clubs can match.
2. Sky cash - the huge amounts involved meant that the difference between being top of the Premier League and near the bottom was worth extra millions each year (now tens of millions).
3. Chumps League - again worth millions and now worth tens of millions each year.
4. More commercialisation - clubs are better at screwing cash out of us. With the "EPL" being a global brand that's even more money - but of course a few top clubs get the most exposure and make the money.
So - it is legitimate to say that United initially made their money by being successful, but once the money starts rolling in, then it becomes self-sustaining. They are not finishing above Everton each year because they have a better team - they are finishing above them because their budget at the start of the year is three times the size of Everton's.
Initially they were the big club in the right place at the right time. Success meant money. Now the money has accumulated to such a level that it guarantees success which makes them more money and they stay top of the pile.
There is no way we could catch United without a huge injection of cash. They are simply too big a business now.
