Where do you stand on Whaling ?

we have no business killing whales, we don't need to, so fucking leave the poor things alone.

Nonsense.
They are weak, therefore we must eradicate them.
Get with that Darwin cat - he knew his onions.
I myself am off on a dwarf cull later,if anyone is interested, followed by a few pints of virgin blood and a kebab made out of thalidomide victims.

Any reason?

they have every right to live on this planet as we do, and it's not our right to go round exterminating other creatures just because we feel like it.

Your standpoint to me sums the bad traits that have come through from the evolution of man and your standpoint completely disregards nature and its ways and means.

I would say that nature has shown over the past several billion years that it's EXACTLY our job to go around exterminating weaker species. This is what survival of the fittest is.

Nature is a battlefield to survive.
A certain mister Hitler held these same views. He used them as an excuse for many of his evil deeds.

the way we kill things isn't natural, so from my point of view at least, "survival of the fittest" does not apply.

We are not a natural predator of the whale and on your logic we'd have to exterminate everything using weapons that are not part of a human's biological make-up.

Nature has shown that those who adapt to their natural surroundings and the changes in nature survive, how you honestly expect whales to evolve to deal with humans using man-made floating devices and man-made traps to catch them and man-made weapons to murder them is beyond me.

Our intelligence makes up for our physical weakness, it doesn't give us the right to believe we are superior to anything else, because we're not, we're from the same cloth as everything else. We're not special, unless you're a believer in the soul and believe some higher power gave us the right to do what we like over other species. Killing for survival is one thing, extermination is another thing entirely.

When whales start building machines that can transport them to the Moon and back, I'll start believing that they're on an equal footing as us. Until then, we are the superior species.

And nature evolves around man all of the time. Have you never seen the Cosmos episode about the Japanese crabs?

so some Japanese crabs are fortunate, is that the point?

Nature doesn't evolve around man all the time, or there wouldn't be lethal illnesses/natural disasters and the like.

They're a reminder that we don't own this planet, and we aren't any better than any other animal, every species has strengths and weaknesses.

We can fly to the moon, but we can't swim underwater naturally all around the world, and very few things we can kill without the use of our intelligence to create man-made weapons to give us the advantage.

We're lucky, just like the crabs, doesn't give either of us the right to exterminate other species.

Are we talking about whales or gingers now?

Gingers from Wales I think?

Errr..that's exactly WHY there are lethal illnesses. Because nature evolves around man.

So? There's not a single animal on the planet that humans cannot kill. This makes us top of the food chain.

I don't know what your definition of "better" is, but humans are BY FAR the most successful macro species on the entire planet in every possible benchmark. It isn't "luck", it's natural selection.

We're lucky, just like the crabs, doesn't give either of us the right to exterminate other species.

You are making the fallacy that nature is just. It isn't. It's the most unjust thing ever recorded.

What I don't understand, is the great hypocrisy that people say we are at equals with nature but we are not part of, or subject to, the mechanisms of natural selection

There are countless species we can't kill, naturally.

it's not natural selection to exterminate other species in a non-natural fashion.

it isn't "survival of the fittest" either, and it is neither of the above which applies to our murdering of whales, amongst other species.

Lethal illnesses aren't just man related, but they show how fallible we are naturally.

Naturally? What do you mean. We are part of nature and as such, anything we do is natural. Animals use tools to survive, are they "un-natural"?
