Where is the single most beautiful place you have been?

No, apart from the last night in Ciudad Bolivar, we didn't go to main cities. Climbed Mt Roraima, the basis of the mountain in the Pixar film Up, went down to the Brazil border (Santa Elena, I think), flew to Canaima on small Cessnas and saw the Angel Falls from both above and below ( sitting in the pool at the bottom!). There wasn't a lot of water coming over it at the time, so, yes, some of the others were better.

Cities were just dangerous after dark. Even at Santa Elena (main industry: contraband, such as people driving from Brazil to fill cars with cheap petrol) we were out on the very edge.

Yeah, I went as a 20 year old lone traveller back in 1997 and even though it was much safer back then it was still not for the faint hearted.

I can remember the police politely marching me back to my hotel in Ciudad Bolivar as there was electricity blackouts and it was not safe for a foreigner to be walking the streets.

Similarly I flew into Canaima, had a day and a half on a rowing type boat and a night in a jungle lodge to make my way to Angel Falls.

Don't stop at red lights, lock the doors or get carjacked, and that was in daylight and not in the cities! That was in 2009 when I was there. Petrol was 20 cents a litre, water was 50 cents a litre.

Two big guys went out looking from beer in the old town and legged it back to the hotel when a SUV pulled up at the next corner.

Lodges? We had hammocks for the night at the Falls.

Ha, Funnily enough after a local beer and being in the sun all day, I fell asleep in a hammock with the light on and the mozzies had a field day.

Also I remember arriving at Caracas Airport and there was a balcony above as you came through customs. People whistling to each other, pointing at me and then leading me to cars purporting to be taxis. Felt proper threatening in comparison to Asia where you similarly get accosted, but with a smile on the face.

Real baptism of fire for a skinny 20 year old.

I was in a tour so we got picked up, straight to the coast. It was dark though and we left in the morning, so didn't see the sea.

On the way home, there were no seats and we had 8 or 9 hours in the airport before leaving. We went to tgi Fridays for a very long time.

Two places mentioned in here - Rio and Cape Town - both stunning but I would not enjoy the risk at both. Have to do by google earth those two.
