No mate, the default position was winning the League Cup meant qualifying for the UEFA, hence why we played in the latter in the 1976/77 season (we finished eight in the in the First Division in 1976/76).

We didn’t play in the UEFA Cup the season after winning the League Cup in 1970 because we entered the Cup Winners Cup as holders. The same principle in relation to the European Cup would have applied to Liverpool in those seasons where they won the First Division and the League Cup.

Interestingly, the foregoing must mean that the CWC was considered a bigger competition than the UEFA Cup. Not sure that would be the case if it was still played today.

The Cup winners cup was one team from each country and so for the fa cup winners only, mate. League cup winners all went into the uefa cup, as we did in 77-78.

We entered the UEFA Cup in 1977/78 because we were runners up in the league (to Liverpool) the previous season, mate.

We also entered it the season after by finishing fourth.

Cheers, that makes more sense, I was just wondering out loud so to speak, when the guy asked what Oxford had done etc I thought they'd won the LC and they had when I checked.
I must admit I just thought both cup winners went into the CWC, not something we had a lot of experience about during my time as a City fan, born just after the previous best period and then to young to understand in 76.

Really, my understanding the pain about City stuff came when I was 9 and the FA cup final and then the Luton relegation game a couple of years later, mostly grim times until Keegan and then Mankers finally giving me a trophy lol

Yikes, West Ham had a terrific season, pretty close to winning the title.

Frank McAvennie and Tony Cottee wreaked havoc that season. They were still in the mix for winning the title going into the last couple of games.
City ‘legend’ Mark Ward was an ever present in that team too.

As you suggest in your final paragraph, the CWC was a big deal back in those days. Second only to the European Cup, in fact. When we won it in 1970 it really was a notable achievement- just a pity that TV decided to show the Leeds v Chelsea FAC Final Replay that night instead of our Final. Then again, the FAC was also a really big deal at the time. IMHO the UEFA Cup / Europa League has always struggled to gain much of a sense of importance - even when we were in it. Evidence being the PL position of last season's 2 finalists.
Returning to the OP's question, the same being asked of the rags (Where were you when you were shit?) would undoubtedly beckon the obvious reply : "Getting knocked out of the Europa League". :-)

Interesting that Liverpool were in their pomp and had won multiple European cups earlier in the 80s, Anfield had a capacity of 52,000 around then, were they the empty terraces where they now call us for empty seats?

Football was in the doldrums at the team with hooliganism making the football fan the enemy of the then Conservative government.

Was at Anfield 3 years before ( lived in Liverpool during the 80s) for a European Cup game along with 11999 others.

Let me be honest.

Most of the time it was shit on the pitch, but it was also great off the pitch as well. On the pitch the teams were shit. Of the pitch City fans were ace.
