Who and what’s to blame?

It's a valid point, but it's part of the problem of going for every competition on show. He's generally rotated a lot, but this season the Laporte and Sané (and occasional Aguero) injuries have really forced him to up it for some players. Liverpool on the other hand only play for two trophies and it's paid off.

For me personally, I am glad the club takes the domestic cups somewhat seriously and respects them. I think it's arrogant to turn our noses up at them, a trophy's a trophy after all. However of course it's a double edged sword for obvious reasons.

I think in the long run it works well going after everything if you can achieve success. There are players at City who have received winner's medals and won trophies multiple times recently. It means that one day when Pep leaves the players left behind will all have that winning mentality really drilled into them.

The good news is that we'll only be in 3 competitions next season due to the League Cup announcement, so the 1st half of next season should be much easier on the team either way.
You and @Millwallawayveteran1988 make great points.

Does anyone think we need a new goalkeeper? As brilliant as he is with his feet, Ederson doesn't inspire me with his hands. Rarely makes great saves and his shot save percentage - 67% is quite poor

I think he has had a really poor season when compared to his previous ones but he is the least of our problems.

One of the reasons why his rate is low is the number of ridiculously clear cut chances we allow the opposition to have from very little possession and sometimes very few attempts.

Chelsea had 15 attempts with 8 on target from 35% possession last night.

The rags had 12 attempts from 28% at home and at our place another 12 from 28% and could easily have scored 5 times before half time.

Taking it to the other extreme, we had 19 shots to Spurs 3 in February and we lost 2-0.

Wolves at home they had 24% possession and 7 attempts and won 2-0. They had 7 attempts at home against us and scored 3 goals.

Defence and DM is the main problem but many of these games should have been done and dusted with the amount of chances we had.

Having said that I think we still would have been second as Liverpool have been too good.

To be honest, we can't really blame VAR. Sure we have been unlucky, but so have other teams.

The major concern is of ofcourse our defence. And not just our players this season, but our history of buying expensive players and not getting the most out of them.

Savic, Boatang, Mangala, Nastasic, Danilo, Mendy to name a few of the names that have come and failed to deliver. Is it largely down to all these players not being good enough? Or is it a deeper issue such as poor coaching or us concentrating on all out attacking mentality?

Personally I think poor communication and and language barrier has played a massive part. A very high number of goals conceded are from our own mistakes which point to poor cohesion across the back 4.

Stones and Otamendi together was an absolute trainwreck to watch. No communication or cohesion there. I haven't felt comfortable watching us at the back since Vinny/Laporte. Hopefully Koulibaly coming in to the team to pair with Laporte (as they both speak French/English) should help this issue.

We also miss Vinny's sheer presence and experience. His ability alone was intimidating to opposing strikers. Now strikers from league 2 teams joke about scoring into Stones. And succeed. Clearly there is no fear factor there. Look at VVD, his presence is dominating. Maybe thats why Fernandinho was moved to CB. But we miss him where he should be. And miss his ability to break down counter attacks with tactical fouls

How many times in the last 2 seasons have we complained about teams scoring with their first opportunity? As much as I love Ederson it's for his footwork. His hand work is average at best

Perhaps that is why it feels like a culmination season for this current cycle?

Winning an FA Cup and the Champions League would feel very much like the end of a journey rather than the start of a new one.

Chelsea had something similar when Drogba was coming to the end?

There has been a lack of intensity from the team and the fans this season. Pep is all about intensity, but you can only push the envelope on that so far.
Totaly agree & I would pull the draw bridge down on a few inc our best striker. It was so obvous Sergio wouldnt get anywhere near in shape after 12 weeks doing fuckall, he needs a full pre season & friendlies to get in shape, we need to look now, Chelsea snapping up Werner we need Havertz

Mendy another player I just dont trust & clearly has a concentration of a 5 year old not good enough for where we need to be
Rodri at times looks class but looks like he struggles in other games with the pace of this league, getting back is a problem for him
Nico although not his fault last night needs to go also along with Stones.

Sorry guys but we need to strike hot with LB, CB & CF if any money left another CM

That's just not true. Teams score with their first shot against us because we pile so many men forward and defend with fewer players, we take risks to win games and have to accept the risks of conceding goals. If teams do break, even though it's less frequent, they are more likely to score because there are less defenders to try and prevent it.
