Why is St Pauli so much of a fashion statement of a club to say you follow?

Religion is a load of shit and without it nobody would ever have heard of that club.

I don't think St. Pauli is anything to do with religion. It's more like an alternative football club to support. Like an indie club if you know what I mean.
They are a catholic and left wing idealistic club.

wow... just wow..

St. Pauli is a district of Hamburg. The club's reputation has nothing to do with religion. It comes more from the clubs somewhat alternative management and it's crowd which consists of many (far) lefts/punks. They are also known for having a very special atmosphere for such a small club and St. Pauli having the nation's most prominent red light disctrict probably also has something to do with their fame.

To add a bit more to what was already written:

Until 1985 or so St.Pauli was just a normal club with a pretty normal fanbase, clearly beeing the second club behind HSV.

At that time the punk scene (which was and is still pretty big in Hamburg) decided to watch some football as well. HSV was no option as they had a lot of trouble with right wing nazi fans back in the 80´s.

So the punks picked St.Pauli as their club. Over the years the old "normal" fanbase of St.Pauli got replaced by punks and people prefering a bit more alternative lifestyle than the HSV supporters.
Same as the fanbase changed, the whole disctrict changed as well, going from a middle class disctrict where the harbor workes used to live, to a district where punks, artists, pimps, whores etc. used to gather.

Hence St.Pauli as a club still has this whole left wing/alternative/socialist feel attached to them.

The friendship to Celtic was the result of many Scots living in Hamburg as dock workers. Some of them (Rangers) befriended HSV and the Celts picked St.Pauli.

Religion didnt really play a role in that friendship.

St.Pauli fans are antiracist as you might have guessed, against homophobia and are heavily engaged in all sort of projects. One of them is to buy season tickets and loan them to immigrant kids for single games, who would otherwise not have a chance to see any football due to the costs involved.

However a lot of football fans despise St.Pauli because they have the tendency to always show off the moral high ground on which they are walking.

You either love them or hate them pretty much...When they got promoted to the 1st division couple years back the German media was wanking themself silly over "the rebel´s choice" club that St. Pauli is.

always had a soft spot for athletico madrid ever since a teenager playing the video game. always choose them, the kit probably did it for me. lazio as well, as they had shirts similar to city

Hearts is my number 2 behind City of course
Lyon (the only team my gooner mate and I agree on) in France
Borussia Monchengladbach in Germany
Napoli or AC in Italy.. (I like Napoli in the post Maradona years, and AC because of my brother)
Probably Athletico in Spain, but I much prefer Real Madrid to Barca in the standard Spanish teams. I hate Barca almost as much as I hate the rags. Here in the states everyone who's no one likes either (or both in most cases) the rags or Barca. Simple teams getting a lot of the press for simple fans. Hate!
And because it's more local... in Mexico I like UNAM, and wherever Cuauhtemoc Blanco is playing at given points during his final seasons. He was my first true love in soccer fanhood lol

I should explain, so I don't get accused of "jumping on the blues bandwagon." I came with the Sheikh fyi! I used to be a bigger Robinho fan, and Carlos Tevez is my favorite player since the early 2000's. So it was absolutely thrilling to see hiim leave a team I've always hated (United, whom I hated before I loved City) and join an "up and coming" team with a newfound hardline optimism to succeed. I also enjoyed watching Adebayor, and when he scored against Arsenal.. will always stand as an awesome memory to me. Now, to further explain why I like the other teams. (not based on success) Though, let me ask, do you ever see 17th place La Liga teams play on TV? No?

I like Hearts because my family tree traces not too far back to Scotland, I couldn't like Celtic or Rangers, so the team I was able to watch and "get into" was Hearts.

As for Lyon and Athletico, the same reason I follow Tevez and Robinho... being from the Americas I've enjoyed and followed both North American and South American teams since I was little. The MLS is a joke, but I've followed the Mexican Primera Liga for years, and then was exposed to South American football. Tevez (Argentina) and Robinho (Brazil). Lyon has Lisandro Lopez (Argentina) and Athletico has Falcao (Columbia). I follow the successful South Americans playing in Europe, and since it's not a diehard fanhood for me, it's enjoyable to follow their teams. It's why I love Aguero and Zabs, too. Fortunately, they play for my team!

I enjoy watching German football, but I took a survey type thing a few years back based on personality, I got BMG. Watching Bundesliga just for fun, I thought that was kindof neat, so I've stuck with it.

After seeing that guy by himself in the away end at an Udinese game, thought I'd join him (in spirit) and help him.

Roma (aforementioned no Totti, no party) and i was looking forward to de Rossi signing for us maybe that will happen this month or in June? can anybody explain the connection to Lazio (i see only the same colours and S-G E and that's about it)

PSG cuz my French mate is from Paris

Celtic (Shunsuke Nakamura sunk rags with that FK of his)
