Who did you play with or against in school or youth football who made it big time and what were they like as youngsters

I know so many lads who's lives took a turn for the worse after being released! One lad who was released from United cuz school told them he was failing maths. I can't see the link myself but it ruined his prospect in life!

Anyway great story about nearly playing with Phill! Bet he would have run rings around you!
Yeah, it reminds me a lot of people who go in to try and join the army. Not the front lines or anything, just literally any part in the army.

I had a mate at university who was so set on joining the marching bands and them who do Trooping of the Colour, wear the bearskins, etc. that he put all his eggs in that basket. He was a euphonium and tuba player. Anyway, they initially rejected him twice because he had an Asperger's diagnosis from when he was 4 years old.

That would have destroyed him - his only other income at the time was a zero hours shift at the Post Office - but thankfully his GP managed to get the diagnosis off his record and he was accepted when he applied a third time. Now he lives in barracks in Twickenham and has done Trooping of the Colour once and has done more Changings of the Guard than he can count.

At 6th form college in Preston I was in the same side as Graham Houston, who went on to play with Preston North End in the late 70's/early 80's and was with them for several years. A very skilful winger and a modest and likeable person as well. He also had brief stints at Burnley, Wigan and Carlisle as well I think. I believe he's a policeman with Lancashire Police now, or was the last time I spoke to him. I also played with Sir Tom Finney's son Brian on a few occasions in our Friday night 7-a-side team. A really lovely guy, but sadly he was not blessed with Sir Tom's skill.....as he was the first to admit!

Not sure it counts, as I am a year older than Nicky Butt, but I nutmegged him in the school yard at Wright Robinson before hitting a 25 yard screamer into what would have been the top corner, if the jumpers on the ground extended up. Generally accepted by all that it was a great goal, and I wound him up about it. He was playing for England and United schoolboys at the time, so it was noteworthy.

I also captained him once at cricket for said school.

I didn’t hang around with him too much, but he seemed a decent enough lad.

Did you ever play with/against Colin Little? (went on to play for Crewe and Macclesfield in the EFL, now youth coach at United) if so you might have played with/against my uncle!
I am pretty sure I played against him in the late 80's / early 90's. Think he played semi pro on the Saturday and then for a team around Burnage on the sunday but memory is a bit hazy.

Mick Buckley used to occasionally play for our school team but spent most of the time away with England youth set up. Had a decent career at Everton and Later Sunderland.
I understand he passed away at a fairly young age RIP

Former Bradford City defender and current Bradford Park Avenue boss Mark Bower, was in my form class at Upper School. I don't really remember anything too remarkable about him. Apart from he was a really good defender.

Wasn't gobby or a bully. Was a sound lad, from memory.

I played against Tony Whelan, me for Stretford Grammar and he for St Pauls, Urmston (1964-1969).

He was playing for the scums youth teams at the time and used to stand on the Kippax with me wearing his Parka full of City badges. A big Blue was Tony.

We used to hang out and went to many concerts in the 70's particularly to see the Who

My dad grew up in Barrow in Furness and played Saturday and Sunday football right through his childhood and into his late teens. Said he regularly came up against Emlyn Hughes as they were about the same age (lived 2 streets apart) and he was a right big head even then then. Liked to leave the boot in too.
Back in the day, we all used to leave the boot in! It was part and parcel of the match - "Get some blood on yer boots!" came to be our motto.
How times have changed.
Happy days - stretchers for goalposts!

Stephen Morrow- remember him? Scored in a league final for Arsenal years ago. Tony Adams lifted him up to celebrate at full time, dropped him and he dislocated his shoulder.
