It is a matter of taste. I like skilled defenders over the grunt defenders. Neither is a grunt like Terry. Both are skilled, but nothing close to a Lucio or Silva. But Hummels is the more skilled, and Subotic the more athletic. Subotic makes more mistakes I believe (Not costly mistakes, but generally forcing plays). So personally I'd vote for Hummels.
Also, I am one of those who view Kompany as more of a VIdic than a Ferdinand. Thus I believe we need a smooth passing defender compliment. Which means Hummels and not Subotic.
Others see Kompany as the passing defender, so they see Subotic as the better compliment.
Like I said, it is a matter of taste. Both are terrific. And yes, we cannot get either one. :)
