Would certainly make the league better
JGL07 said:Celtic's support has been 'exaggerated' as has been Rangers. Sell season tickets for rock bottom prices and count them all as attending every week. You can see the huge gaps in the crowd on TV.
They only really turn up when they are winning. They were getting crowds of 8,000 - 10,000 in the early to mid-1990s. There was an organized boycott but attendances did not improve much after the take over.
Celtic were getting crowds of around 5,000 in the mid-1950s when the team was in the doldrums and Hibs and Rangers were dominating. They spent much of the time fighting each other! The best supporters in the world? My arse!
Very similar with Rangers. They had crowds below 10,000 in the early 1980s when Aberdeen (under Baconhead) and Dundee United were winning the silverware. The 45,000 crowds reported at Ibrox this season are complete hogwash as Strathclyde Police have confirmed.
Rangers and Celtic have systematically destroyed the SPL by taking most of the cash through threats to 'leave the SPL' and weakening anyone who posed a challenge. They grab any player they want from non Old Firm teams and then leave them to rot in the reserves or on the bench.
They they had the nerve to complain that their prospects in Europe were being destroyed because the SPL was too weak to give them competition.
The support for Rangers and Celtic is a mixture of religious bigots from either side of the sectarian divide and glory hunters plus a limited number of genuine fans. Why should someone who lives in Edinburgh or Motherwell support Celtic just because they are a Catholic? Why must the Battle of the Boyne have to be replayed every Old Firm match?
Their support extends throughout Scotland and Ireland and in the Scots/Irish diaspora throughout the world. They will not come anywhere near Arsenal for support (even in Ireland?)!
Most fans in Scotland would be glad to see the back of the bigoted pair of Rangers and Celtic along with most of their supporters. The need each other and deserve each other. Unfortunately no-one else will have them. Scotland remains stuck with the pair of them.
The SPL could be a good competitive league if the pair of them left.
