Tony Book had understandably attempted to improve City's faltering defence. The major transfer activity involved a deal with Luton Town, a club with which City were particularly familiar after the League Cup epic of the previous season. There may have been some confusion in the City management when they contacted Luton Town expressing an interest in Futcher. Perhaps they recalled being impressed by a [emphasis in the original] Futcher but they couldn't remember which [emphasis in the original] Futcher. The outcome was that they bought both Futcher twins.
Paul Futcher, an England Under-21 international, was elegant, confident in possession of the ball, and never hurried. He gave every impression of being a superior kind of British central defender. Unfortunately he also had a seemingly inbuilt self-destruct mechanism that triggered just often enough to suggest that the general impression he gave was largely superficial. Brother Ron was a centre forward from whom little was expected apart from some cover for injuries.
