Who should be the next leader of the Tory party?

Cant say i watched either of them but having seen some clips on twitter its just damaging to let these people speak to each other...

I saw a report in the US recently where the GOP are trying to shut down the concept of live debates. Basically they know a lot of their candidates are awful people who will not stand up well to basic scrutiny so they are thinking of just blanket not doing it. And their is no way Trump could do them if he ran so they are looking to normalise not doing it. Not great for democracy.
They’re a relatively new phenomena and don’t seem to work.

Mentioned before that the party is hopelessly divided along multiple fault lines and that the only thing uniting them is the unhealthy desire to remain in power. The country is sliding into recession, however, with public services on the brink, and industrial action threatening to cripple society. Indeed, if things carry on in this direction, it will be impossible for any Conservative leader to govern effectively, particularly when their own internal support will be called into question. The next leader will have to either try to ride out the turbulence until 2025 or try to seek their own mandate later this year.

Why have they cancelled tonites debate ? We have already seen how divided the nasty party are , they propped up boris so we know they are liars , nothing to lose by doing the last debate

That's exactly it - regardless of how good or bad the country is being run, it has got to the point where it appears to be solely about self preservation.

Let's be honest, with the amount of wealth Mr & Mrs Sunak have, why on earth would you take on a very high profile and stressful role, paying you what say £80k? You wouldn't bother, not unless being in those positions of power provides you with opportunities to increase that wealth greatly and shape your own future - therefore nothing about serving the country or the salary.

I think the world has outgrown politics as we know it. I would say there used to be an underlying trust on our part that the people in charge were doing it for the good of the country and collective betterment (possibly naively so) - don't think that can be labelled at anyone in power for quite some time now............

They started holding them so the wider electorate would get to know them....they are cancelled now because the wider public got to know them

With two of the front three not showing, not much point.
Sunak/Truss probably don't see a need to be shot at again - they are better known than the others.

Its getting increasingly difficult to see what the splits in the tory party are.

Rishi is seen as a centrist, and is the choice of the majority of MPs. He was a committed brexiteer so not sure he is economically sound. Members dont seem to want him.

Truss was a remainer - now a bit more nutty and is seen as the candidate of choice for the right wing press and many ERG types. Not sure what she offers that Sunak doesnt although i guess she will push harder on the brexit problems. Awful personality and piss poor in front of the camera she wont do well as PM. So why all the backing?

PM - I dont see where she fits in re above. She was again a brexiteer and is talking about redoing brexit. What does that mean.

Badenoch is an oustider who has positioned herself on the right and gone heavy on culture wars stuff. Possibly a popular line with members but she wont win so doesnt have to worry about the mess she would cause.

Tomtit. Seems the best choice - will go out tonight.

FRom the top 4 - different personalities but policy wise. The only difference is how quickly they will look to cut taxes. But that will all go out the window soon enough when reality bites. So i see nothing between them.

They should have Lord Sugar and his team doing this 'show' as it is a glorified Apprentice. OK as a team until the results go below par, then under Sugar's questioning they crack and blame each other. The only difference this time is that everyone would be fired.

The leadership contenders do not naturally reflect the views of the party. I think there are divisions on tax, divisions on trade, divisions on Brexit and the speed of further change, divisions on redressing the imbalance in society, and divisions on what to do with the devolved nations, not least Northern Ireland. Instead of addressing these things openly, we instead see it boiled down to personalities, but you’re right on the point that reality is going to bite them all sooner or later, though it will bite society harder.
