Who should be the next leader of the Tory party?

Its going to be hard for them not to elect one - look outside the candidates that have declared and see the loonies in their ranks - Swayne - the Steves Baker and Barclay - Bradley - Bridgen - Cash - Clarke - Clarke-Smith - Coffey - Drax - Fabricant - Anderson - Francios - Jenkinson - Jenkyns - Kawczynski - Kruger - Leigh

I challenge you to find a moderate non-gammon swivel eyed Brexiteer among them

Um, challenge declined.

I thought Drax was the villain in View to a Kill?

One of the little addressed points about Johnson’s demise is how ’policy bankrupt’ the government is. COVID and then Partygate has kept attention firmly focused on Johnson and away from the country’s governance, yet now that he’s no longer the focus and because none of the candidates has anything approaching his personality, more attention will naturally fall on policy and the nitty gritty. People will soon start to appreciate that policy is being made on the hoof, which is never successful, and that the candidates are hopelessly il-equipped and unable to command a divided party.

And Wallace. And Patel (if she doesn't run).
The difference being Raab might be seriously thinking of the leadership in 2025 should they lose the next General Election. Patel probably appreciates that she’s too toxic to ever be prime minister, and Wallace probably knows that he would be at best the man in charge when the country is going into a recession, so why take that role and all the abuse when you know you’ll be out at the next General Election anyway? He can instead sit tight, not ruffle any feathers, and maintain his position at Defence whoever wins. It’s also one of the few departments that is likely to see its budget increased, so quite a canny decision by him.

Yeah, and that's what I meant.
Those prepared to sit tight now, whilst letting others scrap it out now for a poisoned chalice that could last until the next GE

If Javid loses then that will be three failed bids, and Hunt, if he fails, two so their respective political careers will be over. If Sunak loses, then he’ll likely quit politics because he’ll never be in a better place to succeed. If the winner is someone else who then loses the General Elections, then they will be toast, too. You’re right, it really is a poisoned chalice at the moment and Raab is wise to pass it along.

This thread is worth a read.

well worth a read and also indicative of how the main contestants are being driven by their donors and the press barons who are the ones who will benefit the most from proposals.

You cut a penny off income tax and that only benefits those who pay income tax anyway. Those that are paying will get a tiny boost in take home pay - welcomed but hardly life changing. In any event most likely to be absorbed in payments to utility companies and petrol station owners.

However - do that for millionaires and the economies of secret offshore tax haven are likely to benefit the most - not the UK economy
