The Spurs and Arsenal games were perfect examples of how difficult this league is right now. Both teams set out at a good tempo and played pretty well. Arsenal were caught out by an exact replica of Real Madrid's tactics vs Barcelona, and Spurs tired, leaving gaps in midfield that were ultimately exploited by one guy's moment of genius. The mid-table clubs have never looked more resourceful, full of belief and organised. They know how to knick the games. The margins are so slim now it's ridiculous. The only reason Utd have won the league is that their psychological advantage is such that both referees and opponents can only picture one result. Strikers miss, goalkeepers spill the ball, refs don't send players off, because the only thing in their mind is a Utd comeback.
So taking every ounce of momentum and belief into a game will probably decide it in your favour. My big hope is that City have that golden feeling right now. We'll see.
Spurs' mentality is fading but they are still dangerous because they have the memory of several great wins over the last year and a bit to call upon. I knew they were done for, when on the eve of the WBA game, Crouch said they would raise themselves for the upcoming big games. It got them through last year but they've ended up losing focuse during the run of the mill stuff.
Us catching Arsenal depends on them more than us. Frankly, god only knows where they are as a collective. Wenger is a horrible sight, it's genuinely not nice seeing such pained body language. Even when things were going okay, he was displaying odd tics.. now he knows what he's doing, yet he can't stop himself....
Mancini's looked shell-shocked once or twice but he's bounced back, he cut an impressive figure during the semi-final, and now it's hugs and high-fives all around, a heart warming, mentally nourishing sight for fans and players. Can Wenger do the same? I'm not sure. The inquest has already started. Whilst players are obviously motivated, the collective belief is being attacked from within. Right now they are missing the calmness and ruthless ability to see out pressure points that has nothing to do with organisation and everything to do with belief in the organisation.
Even so, they are capable of anything, and the fast passing will surely overwhelm at least a couple of teams, they will get early-ish goals in some games, just enough to see them finish ahead of us. Probably.
