Who was/is the best tv Detective?

Not a detective as such but I always enjoyed Rumpole when it was on.

From one of my favourite shows ever Detective Albert Chisholm for those old enough - though he wasn't that much of a detective

In modern times I loved Gene Hunt - and he was a blue!

For an American cop I always liked Lennie Briscoe - think I must have watched about 300 law & orders - detective munch a close second

Also like inspector montalbano, although some of the characters are a bit irritating plus the same old joke with the door and one of the detectives always firing his gun by accident.
