Who would you like to see write a book on their time at City?

It refers to alleged financial impropriety. Understating attendances with the corresponding gate money presumably going into someone's pocket, companies associated with people in office at the club signing contracts to work with the club at high rates, bungs on transfers - that type of thing. All very common in football generally at the time and all presumed to have been going on at City.
But at least the club had a soul back then!

Thanks for the explanation! Glad that doesn't happen anywhere anymore!!

Yes, those demos outside the Main Stand were merely an expression of angst at the wider world.

I miss a good demo. My mate and I made a banner when we were in 6th form - 'Up or Down - Swales Must Go!' We took it to the Southampton game in April 1987, got there early and hung it on the fence at the front of the Kippax. The police made us take it down. I'm sure they'd have let us keep it up had we written something along the lines of: "The future of Peter Swales is merely a felicitous vehicle for the expression of our genuine but wholly impotent angst at the wider world."

Anyway, City kindly lost 4-2 so the banner took centre stage at the inevitable post-match expression of angst. There was a photo of it alongside the match reports the Sun and Mirror the following Monday, as well.

My most notable expression of angst towards the wider world was at the Liverpool game just after Machin was sacked, but before Kendall was appointed. Skip.was caretaker manager. I was sat quite near Swales during the game and decided to use that opportunity to let him know what I thought of him. That episode didn't make the national press...

I did a modern languages degree and that season was the year I spent abroad. Thus, I didn't attend many games and the Liverpool fixture was one I missed. Am I right in thinking that it was the day after Swales went on kick-off talking about hiring Joe Royle immediately ahead of an Oldham Friday night home fixture at which the crowd reaction then prompted Royle to turn us down?

I'm sure your take down of Swales was done emphatically but with style, by the way.

I'm not sure. It may have been a little later as I think we were in limbo for a little while. Looking back at the fixtures, the Liverpool game was on the 2nd December and I think Kendall's first game in charge was Norwich at home on Boxing Day, although upon reflection I do remember him going to watch us at the Dell on the 9th before he was appointed so it doesn't make sense (even for Swales!) offering the job to Joe (which was on a Friday night iirc) after the Liverpool game, so you're probably right. I remember Joe citing the reaction of the tea ladies at Oldham as a reason for him staying - how times change!

As to your all too kind comments about my delivery, I'm not sure you're entirely right. My oral style has (thankfully) developed a little more finesse since 1989!

I can imagine you being floppy haired and sounding like a yonner.
