The Yanks (and the Aussies) were fucked over when Qatar were 'given' the nod. They don't like being fucked over, so it'll be a lot more of 'watch this space'. The US won't let anything like this rest! Platini has a lot of answering to do, particularly the 'light lunch' he had with Sarkozy and the Qatari prior to the vote!
It may well have been covered in this thread already (apologies if it has), but I read an interesting article somewhere yesterday that shed an interesting light on the role that the US government could play in prosecuting this. Apparently because the bribes were paid in dollars, the case falls under the jurisdiction of the US Department of Justice, and with the States being one of the 'wronged' parties this could get very interesting indeed.

Indeed they will. As I mentioned the use of $ is key. The FBI investigate all cases of fraud and crime involving $ on an global basis.
Let the games commence!

Well the 'Usual Suspects' are being lined up for 'Scapegoat' duty.
Not that I have any sympathy for Mr P. but I seem to remember a certain Alex F. dealing with his son as a Football Agent yet the MCFC / Etihad Airways connection has been the one to be investigated for fairness.

I would like to see evidence against all the members (including the very top).
That way we would possibly have a slight chance to get rid of all the potential widespread corruption within football's hierarchy.

As I see it Mr Blatter's position is likely to be that he had no idea it was going on and is grateful to The Sunday Times for bringing this to his attention.
Sounds very much like the defense used by Bank CEO's, BBC Directors and the farcical disclaimers by Mr Murdock's newspaper chiefs, (surely no connection there ?) .

If Mr B. did not know it was happening then he is part of the problem not the man to trust with a permanent solution.
His judgement in employing these people in the first place is the main problem if corruption is not the Culture within the Organisation.
He cannot have it both ways.

But of course he will wriggle out of blame and will distance himself from the Culture he has grown. Then back to business as usual with new compliant foot soldiers.

Problem is how do you get rid of it in an organisation that are the embodiment of an old boys club? It's full to the brim of 'football people', all there because they moved in the right circles and kissed the right arses.

I'm with fetlocks on this - Believe it when I see it. When you have that many people all in on the same act it takes a huge external force to break it apart. At the moment it's like some huge indiscriminate blob, you fire shots at it and it just absorbs and moves on.

FIFA will not eat itself.

Bodies like this will willingly sacrifice one or two fall guys now and then in order to preserve the rest, then they close ranks and declare themselves 'clean and holy' again, even having the audacity to maintain that any wrong was only those they've now tossed out, and not inherent within the organisation.

The only realistic way they will reform is with sufficient external pressure from sponsors and governments, particularly the former.

Once sponsors start saying "we don't like the image you're portraying and it's reflecting badly on us)' then you'll see the infighting start. That's when people will turn on one another, and Blatter won't stand a chance. They'll all be eager to become the 'reformer' of FIFA and the golden boy of the sponsors....

Where the seeds of ill-intent are once again sowed.

The IOC was similar, and now it's deemed far better (but it could also be argued they are just a little better at hiding the 'perks' of being members).

The hospitality that these people are lavished with, and perks and prestige.... they can only lead to one end. Greed and corruption.
People should put a bit in for the World Cup, FIFA are welcome to come and visit and check things out, but they should pay for it themselves (our of FIFA funds). No private meetings, not 'guests' on luxury yachts, no schmoozing, or sharing privileged match tickets, sipping champagne with representatives of top clubs.

It's vomit inducing, and gives the public no confidence in impartiality.

Re: Whos Not playing by the rules now Mr Platini??????

The biggest question isn't who is corrupt at the highest level. Just assume they all are. But if there is a mountain of information about Qatar buying the WC 2022, will they then be punished by losing it? Discussions I'm hearing on soccer radio over here says that the US is starting to put together their information in a bid to takeover the 2022 WC if Qatar is stripped. I would guess the same thing is happening in Australia.

What is the institutional relationship between Fifa and Uefa?

Re: Whos Not playing by the rules now Mr Platini??????

The USA may or may not have been wronged in all this, but what I don't understand is how can a country that doesn't really rate "Soccer" that highly get to host the most prestigious football tournament twice in 20 years?

Because football administrators are greedy bastards and the US market is potentially very lucrative. There's also a bit of opportunism because American egg chasing is in decline. Apparently it fucks with your brain big style and parents prefer to steer their kids towards "soccer". Some Yank has been on Talk Shite speaking about this.

Whist I believe Australia deserved the 2022 World Cup, to me there is no doubt that tournament being held in the USA would deliver incredible commercial benefits to the global game and finally place 'soccer' alongside their indigenous sports in that nation's consciousness imo. The possibilities are immense and the timing perfect, as there is a great deal of upward momentum behind the sport in the US now. It is rapidly approaching critical mass.
