Why are there NO openly Gay Footballers?

We have come a long way since the 70's and 80's and Justin Fashanu.

I really think a gay footballer could easily come out and survive it. There would probably be legislation to ban homophobia in football stadiums on the back of it.

On the whole I think it would be a good thing, but despite being completely cool with gay people, I'm not sure I could resist laughing if it was a Rag. I suppose you could say I am then not completely cool with gay people at all, but it would be a seriously funny to see how embarrassed some of their neanderthal fans would be.

What if it was one of ours though - genuine question. Would your opinion of him change. Mine would. Sorry but it would.

Fucking unbelievable.
What century are you living in?
I'm actually embarrassed for you here.
Would you not chant his name,or celebrate one of his goals,or would you just rather we sold him?
I honestly didn't know folk like you still existed.

Look NF Im not going to be the punch bag in one of your verbal sparring sessions. I said my opinion of the player would change, i didn't say it would lower, just change. Wipe the froth from your mouth and read the posts.
This is an opinion held by most people. The opinion changes toward the person in a subtle way and for most people(and me) not a negative way.

How the fuck do you know that 'most people' hold your opinion?
All of my mates don't,and I doubt most on here do either.
You are fully entitled to be homophobic if you are daft enough.
Just don't try and justify your ignorance by wrongly assuming you are in the majority, because thankfully you aren't.

An average male thinks of sex 250 times a day. I would say that it is part of a persons personality.

Are you paranoid that Gay people are eyeing you up? You should be flattered if they make a pass at you.

-- Sun Sep 30, 2012 1:10 pm --

I strongly agree with the rest of your comments but are you so naive to think homophobia still isn't rife in our society? Stonewall announced a rise in reported assaults believed to be motivated by homophobia - even in London which is a very diverse and tolerant City.

I'm not naive enough to pretend that homophobia isn't still rife - far from it,but for someone to state that their attitude would change towards a player, especially one of our own, because of his sexuality is quite surprising in this day and age.
And sadly depressing.

It's a sad indictment of my background but I can think of a few Lads who wouldn't want to support that player. They'd do their best to hide it but the prejudice is there. It was only a few years ago that the John O'Shea rumours were doing the rounds and there were several abusive chants aimed at him from our match day support. Have you heard equally racist chants at City? The Park Ji-Sung one is debatable but, by and large, the same two offences aren't there.

I am wrong because your mates say so?
I am not going to get into a long drawn out argument with you about this, but think this over. How many people on here and in the country would know who Gareth Thomas is until he became the gay rugby player gareth Thomas. Peoples perceptions change. It doesn't make it wrong!

I don't follow Rugby but Gareth Thomas was known to me as the Welsh Captain long before I heard he'd come out of the closet. He wasn't some reserve team substitute which is why his decision to announce it in particular was so well known.

I think that homophobia is widely viewed as one of the last remaining 'acceptable' prejudices nowadays, but hopefully over time it will go the same way as racism.
That said,Adebayor got a dog's abuse off some Arsenal fans when we beat them 3-0 the other year - some of their chants were vile, and some of the stuff they sing at Tottenham is equally awful.
As for Rangers/Celtic and their sectarian circus, the least said the better.

Odds are that you would know, yes. But the vast majority didn't know who he was. And next thing he is on celebrity something or other and now my wife knows who he is! Why is that?
