Why are there NO openly Gay Footballers?

I think it's because of the way they treated at school, so.They stay away from team sports so even if they have any talent they wouldn't be able to progress because he wouldn't get excepted by the other players

There are several but they play in obscure leagues. Mario Gomez gave a strong hint last year that several members of the German national team are gay and that they would be fully supported in Germany if they came out, and Angela Merkel backed him. The reaction would be different in different countries, in eastern Europe for example it would be career suicide to come out, but in more open-minded (but not perfect as we all know) countries like Germany and England the majority of fans I believe would be accepting. By the way we were the first club to be officially recognised as gay-friendly by Stonewall all the way back in 2006 so any gay footballer at City would be strongly supported by the club and I believe the majority of the fans.

BTW MSP, if Dzeko one day revealed himself to be gay would you and others disown him as your national sporting hero?

Are you an expert on eastern European gay issue then?

There would certainly be John Terry-style abuse on the field from opponents. Robbie Fowler accused Graeme Le Saux of being gay cos he read the "Guardian". And within the player's own dressing room too; some players aren't bright enough to know when "banter" becomes an offensive jibe.
Still, as the consensus seems to opine, what the hell does it matter, any more than "how many left-handed players are there?", or "how many insomniacs?"

A piece on Robbie Rogers suggests he retired 'by mutual consent' with Lids:
<a class="postlink" href="http://m.guardian.co.uk/football/2013/mar/29/robbie-rogers-coming-out-gay" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://m.guardian.co.uk/football/2013/m ... ng-out-gay</a>

Some amazingly Dark Ages attitudes, but is it the club or the game?

An often overlooked problem from the Media, FA and other Orgs is the career prospect of Footballers.
if a player came out tomorrow I sense his earning potential would fall, with companies such as Sportswear brands shying away from the gay player.

I mean lets say Aguero came out tomorrow (yes I know he has kids/wife etc) would you feel comfortable in wearing Puma clothing?

There are many insecure young males out there who buy brands like Puma who would stop buying Puma as they would be ridiculed at School and wherever as they would be wearing that clothing brand worn by that gay player...

I couldn't give a monkeys about who's gay but Football is just a reflection of Society. Society needs to change more, then the game will.

Not one eastern European country recognises same sex couples, allows same sex marriage, or allows same sex adoption. The only area of Europe where same sex couples are completely shut out. Homophobia (and in some cases racism) is rampant in most of these countries. Some light reading:

Go ahead and convince me eastern Europe is a haven of tolerance to same sex couples if you like.

Good points there. But for the sake of an argument:

Does making gay marriage legal mean that UK is more tolerant than for example Czech? (also eastern Europe by definition and does recognises same sex partnerships). Have you not witnessed any attack on gay people in UK? I have lived in Prague since 2009 and I cannot say I see homosexuals hanged from lamposts or being lynched here. Just a bit touchy when people generalise too much mate.
