I think the singing section is probably a reason for the poor atmosphere, not because they're not making any noise but because if the people in those sections were more spread out it would encourage others to sing.
Agree completely, Im in 118 and in the past you'd have had a group of 3 or 4 over here and 5-6 over there. then you'd have the lone loon who started something up and all the little groups would sing together and it would pick up. Was exactly the same in the North Stand at Maine Road.
There was none of this singing section stuff or forming groups, you paid your money, you went, you sang if and when you wanted. If there was an old couple behind you, you tried to limit how much you stood because you'd talk to people around you and understand that they found it difficult to be up and down all match, you tried to calm your language down a tad when you got worked up because its not on calling the ref a fucking cuntbag toss face who should have his bollocks cut off with a rusty stanley in front of an older lady.
When it got exciting and you stood up for long periods they would'nt give you much shit because you talked and they remember what its like being a young un with that youthful passion wanting to roar your team on so they cut you some slack because you did little things like sit on the edge of the seat when its up instead of standing when everyone else was. when you lost your temper and swore like a trooper you'd turn round with a sheepish look and say sorry, sometimes to your surprise the sweet old lady would say dont worry love he's a proper twat this one and you'd all have a good laugh.
It seems now nobody has the patience, its all "fuck em I want to stand and sing all match and I dont give a shit what the people around me think" attitude or its off to the singing section and sing wank songs. Cant remember the last time I heard some of the old songs like you are my City my only City, We are City from Maine Road or City til I die, regularly hear that faggot in the "colour" song or the baby's not your's.
Mildly amusing but hardly likely to get the ground bouncing, apologies if the oldies are sung but I rarely hear them all the way over in 118, the 20 or so young lads messing singing about gay blokes put the rest of that block to shame, there should be an under 30's section to get the real singers all together the atmosphere would be amazing then ;)
