Why do we pander to Africa?

Did you object when the World Cup went to the USA? Or will you moan when it comes here with all the crime we have. Or haven't you seen the news recently with all the stabbings and gun crime we have?
I know the newspapers like to have you all cowering in fear back at home, but if you think Britain's crime problems are even in the same stratosphere as South Africa's then I'm afraid you are very much mistaken.

I disagree. why shouldnt they get the opportunity to host such an event and benefit from the installation and/or upgrading of vital infrastructure that could turn some of these cities fortunes around. after the disappointment of the ANC revolution they could do with something that will bring a sense of unity and hope to the country again.

people will go to the world cup and a majority of them will be fine. but some will listen to those who spurt bs like 'carjackings are the norm!' and stay in their little enclaves and spend the next few months moaning that the world cup wasnt held somewhere within an easy jet flightpath.

But he wasn't describing a City though, but a country.

OK, if I say...... England, US, Jamaica, Afghanistan.....still not racist is it ? All are full of all the things he describes, in my opinion. There were an awful lot of "scum" around CoMS yesterday evening, plus some crime, and according to some it was "dangerous", just for example.

I don't disagree about the nature that a number of PDC's posts are racist (and he's had warnings and temporary bans), but as a moderating team we have to be careful how we describe "racist", and I don't personally think this topic was.

RACISM---"Discrimination or prejudice based on race"

I think you need to look up the dictionary definition of 'racist' ....so I will ask you once again, what has the OP said that make him a racist in this thread?

That is a pretty weak definition you found. Doesn't mention at all insulting language used to describe people, and I find particularly the words "scum filled" to be quite insulting. He described South Africa as a scum filled place, so all South Africans are scum. Yeah, I think thats racist.

No Saying a country is scum filled is not racist, insulting maybe but not racist, as I said check the definition. You did what most libs do; you jumped on a left wing sensationalist bandwagon and assumed that anyone pointing faults in the continent of Africa is racist. FYI- the South African people are not a race......

So, I’ll ask again, are you going to apologise to the OP?

I am personally astounded that the terrorist Mandela is lorded as some kind of hero to the hand wringing liberal sycophants I’m sick of seeing football teams ‘celebs’ banging on what an honour it was to meet him etc the man is as bad as the terrorist leaders of Al Queda, this is a man let us not forget who admits he ‘signed off’ the church street bombing in 1983 from his prison cell…..

It's not racist to choose not to hold a World Cup in a crime filled, scum filled, dangerous, poor country.

When will people get this into their thick skulls.

I for one will not be taking my kids to the World Cup this year, and it pisses me off.

Do you specialise in xenophobic, racist, generalisations? I find your ignorance shocking.

The only thing I would challenge would be the word 'poor'. Probably the richest country in Africa, but where there's brass there's mountains of filth and poverty, but by most international standards South Africa is not a poor country. The rest clearly fit. I'm not certain what you mean by scum, whether this is a reference to the people committing the crimes or the United diaspora!

Labelling a whole continents population as you have is hardly the the stuff of intelligent debate.

Good idea. You stay at home where everything will be fine and dandy.

true about his consent for church street. but it was part of a wider conflict. It was one of several bombings carried out by MK, 'spear of the nation', who targeted government and military targets. you could argue church street was a military target, 11 out of the 19 killed were military personnel, 2 more were the bombers themselves. still, 6 civilians were murdered.
the ANC claimed the attack was planned in response to a raid into lesotho by south african forces that killed 42 ANC supporters, including civillians.

I think of it as a wicked act of murder, but I don't forget the ANC were fighting for their lives, and the fight can be seen as a struggle for the most basic human rights for themselves and other coloureds and blacks.

of course you can read about 'spear of the nation', how they were formed (after many many years of oppression by the authorities), and how deeply mandela and the others thought about these issues. these accounts are part of a wider 'narrative' about the troubles in south africa.

it is fashionable in certain circles to call mandela a terrorist. it is a label that can be applied, but the ANC didn't turn to these tactics for years. it ignores the murderous oppression and denial of property and political freedom of the south african regime. it ignores what happened afterwards as well. mandela reunited a broken country. perhaps he was the only person who could do so, who could push through the policy of reconciliation that is a uniquely successful example of how to resolve such a bitter internal conflict. he left south africa united and free. that's why he is venerated.

crime is a huge problem in south africa, but the central areas are pretty safe. friends of mine have been going on holiday to jo'burg and cape town for decades. I am reliably informed they are spectacular and vibrant. it's not the third world. it's comparable to somewhere like rio. you follow the guidelines and you are safe. you go wandering or make a target of yourself and you are in trouble.
