Why does everything seem to be made into some kind of competition?

What is this need to have the best house, car, kids, dog?
The most attractive wife?
The best job?
Wear the best clothes?
Go on the best or most exotic holiday evah?
Drink the most alcohol?
Wear the most expensive lycra whilst riding the best pushbike on your way to drink the best coffee in the best coffee shop?
Even walk the most steps in a day?
Is this quest for the perfect life, (which is unachievable) making people more selfish and unhappy?

It's Nature, like stags butting heads, chimps scrapping or lions wrestling we have adapted the animal need for one to gain dominance as leader into more pathetic trivial goals

I think this is the best post I have ever read. :-)

In the 80's and 90's it was the yuppies, now it's the turn of ' The Influencer ' usually desperate for attention or their next pay cheque and usually without a pot to piss in but hey, they look good in a selfie next to someone elses flash wheels or in a posh hotel foyer. The weak minded lap it up and so the cycle continues.

I think the 4 bed detached, 2 new cars on the drive and three expensive holidays a year thing has come about because we new tend to be dual income households and start families a lot later, so disposable income ( until recently) has probably been higher for couples. Not sure any of this actually makes anyone happier though with women probably getting the worst deal - society basically saying you can have all this, kids and a career but there's still only 24 hrs in the day.
